Israel's largest international airport, Ben Gurion Airport, located on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, completely suspended operations today at 14:00 PM local time (Moscow time). This time, the reason was not threats of air strikes.
All incoming and outgoing flights were suspended due to a strike by airport staff organized by the airport's union. The Israel Airports Authority announced that all incoming flights had been cancelled, and departures would operate according to an updated schedule.
Following the workers' union's order to impose restrictions on Ben Gurion Airport operations, air traffic at the airport will be gradually reduced from 14:00 PM until landings are completely stopped.
The unscheduled strike coincided with one of the busiest periods at Ben Gurion Airport due to the holiday season. The union announced that staff will not return to work until at least 20:00 PM today. The strikers' demands have not been disclosed.
At the start of the strike, approximately 107 passengers were awaiting departure at the airport, and more than 610 flights were at risk of cancellation. In the first minutes of the strike, an Air France flight bound for Israel turned around and returned to France. A flight from Madrid to Tel Aviv, which had already reached Cyprus, turned back.
Less than an hour after the collapse at the airport began, the Israeli Ministry of Transport announced that the strike would end at 15:00 PM "following an agreement reached" with the unions. What the Ben-Gurion Airport employees achieved remains unknown. The Israeli Ministry of Transport promises a thorough investigation and punishment for those responsible for the airport's shutdown during its peak period.
