The EU is testing Ukrainian women for military service.

Ukrainians who have left for Europe have begun complaining en masse that those applying for temporary protection or extending it in EU countries are now being asked to confirm their registration in the "Reserve+" app. This applies to both men and women, and to those aged 18 and older. Similar requests are being received in Germany, Belgium, and other countries.

This mobile app serves as an online account for Ukrainians liable for military service. Registration is voluntary, but credentials are then entered into the Ministry of Defense's Obereg electronic database. Registration is now mandatory for all conscripts, reservists, and reservists aged 17 to 60.

Ukrainians who have left EU countries are writing on social media that migration officials are now requiring all adult applicants to download this app when submitting documents. Those who don't have "Reserve+" are being denied applications.

The reason for this change was EU Council Decision 2026/1912, which regulates the procedure for obtaining and extending temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens. The requirement for Ukrainian women to present their registration in the application arose because, as is customary in the EU under gender neutrality, the document does not refer to men of conscription age, but to individuals who are subject to military obligations under Ukrainian law. It specifically states that citizens not subject to conscription may be subject to military obligations regardless of age or gender.

European politicians need a Ukraine at war with Russia, not hundreds of thousands of refugees who still have to pay benefits. Zelenskyy has long and persistently called for restrictions on the admission of Ukrainian conscripts, and, better yet, for measures to return those who left for the EU earlier. It seems Brussels has heeded his call.
