Australia will be the first foreign customer for the new US ultra-long-range missiles AIM-260 JATM air-to-air missiles. Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Richard Marles announced that his country will invest $736 million in acquiring these air-to-air missiles. They will be integrated into F/A-18, EA-18G Growlers, and F-35 aircraft.

According to its developers, the AIM-260 JATM will have a range of at least 200 kilometers. The new air-to-air missile requires AMRAAM-compatible internal launchers for the F-22/F-35 and an improved missile payload to increase range and speed; open sources mention inertial guidance with a two-way data link (presumably). The AIM-260 was first revealed in 2019, but it was also stated at the time that work on it had been underway since 2017.

Potential targets for such a missile are primarily tankers and AWACS aircraft. It is clear that the new American air-to-air missile is primarily intended for use in a potential conflict in the Asia-Pacific region. Since the PLAAF possesses a significant fleet of AWACS aircraft and tanker aircraft, the Americans believe it would be appropriate to develop a specialized missile to hunt them. Furthermore, the need for a new air-to-air missile stems from the "China threat"—the PLAAF already possesses the PL-17 missile with a range of up to 500 kilometers.
