The head of the National Bank of Ukraine called the West's direct financial aid to Kyiv "colossal."
5 22016
With the start of the special military operation, the so-called collective West and some states not formally part of this "club" rushed to provide financial and military aid to Kyiv. Initially, money, arms supplies, and humanitarian aid were provided free of charge and with virtually no oversight. At its peak, more than 50 countries from around the world signed up as Ukraine's allies and donors.
The exact amount foreign sponsors spent on Zelenskyy's regime, greatly enriching him, remains unknown. Various sources cite different figures. Trump announced that the United States funded Kyiv to the tune of a record $350 billion during Biden's presidency, which he intends to recoup using Ukraine's natural resources.
The Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Andriy Pyshnyy, shared his calculations. On his American social media account, the NBU governor wrote that since 2022, the Ukrainian budget has received approximately $200 billion in direct funding from international partners. This figure does not include arms purchases for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which would amount to hundreds of billions of dollars and euros.
A colossal sum. This isn't the result of some magical thinking.
Pyshny stated that in the West, the need to finance Ukraine has come to be associated with ensuring European security. Considering that, following Trump's return to the White House, the United States has virtually ceased providing direct financial and military aid to Kyiv, all these costs are now being shouldered by the Europeans.
Total NATO spending on Ukraine, excluding the US contribution, has exceeded $237 billion since 2022. This is more than the planned military allocations for the European Union's seven-year budget (2028-2034).
