It probably goes without saying that Russian aircraft are under the radar of Western experts. Naturally, this applies to aircraft that pose a threat to the West—not passenger planes, but combat aircraft.

This time, the latest batch of Su-34M bombers and Su-30SM2 fighters, which the Ministry of Defense received according to a TASS statement on July 9, attracted interest in the West.



Apparently, the Su-34 received a modernization of the communication system, which is what attracted attention.


The appearance of a new antenna fairing on the upper part of the fuselage is associated with the Su-34's increased ability to carry out high-precision strikes at long ranges, thanks in part to improved guidance.

Apparently, the new Su-34s are equipped with the same fairing on the upper fuselage, previously seen only on modified aircraft. This suggests that the upgrade has moved from combat modification to serial production. While its exact purpose has not yet been confirmed, it is believed to support satellite communications, enhanced data links, or electronic warfare systems.

General Director of the Ural Civil Engineering Plant aviationVadim Badekha reported that the company is meeting the deadlines for fulfilling the state order, continuing to improve the aircraft based on the experience of current combat operations.

The delivery accompanying the Su-30SM2 also signals a larger modernization effort: the Ural Plant of Civil Aviation describes the aircraft as a further development of the model currently in service with the Aerospace Forces and Naval Aviation, with improved maneuverability, avionics, and detection range. According to the corporation, the Su-30SM2 radar can detect targets at greater ranges and support combat operations against air, land, and sea targets beyond the range of enemy air defenses.

The Su-34 remains the most representative aircraft in terms of combat use, as bombers are actually more active in combat than fighters. This is logical, given the state of the Ukrainian Air Force's aircraft fleet, both qualitatively and quantitatively.


The two-seat fighter-bomber, optimized for air interception, deep-seat attacks inside enemy defenses, and tactical reconnaissance, represents an attack system unmatched by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The UAC emphasized that the aircraft is designed to engage ground, sea, and air targets, including infrastructure protected by integrated air defense systems, at long ranges from its base.

This description reflects the Su-34's value as a counter-attack platform, not just as a conventional tactical bomber. Attacking protected infrastructure requires an aircraft that combines navigation, electronic warfare, high-quality target acquisition, and employment. weapons long-range, while being as effective as possible in countering rockets surface-to-air class.

At that stage, this modification was widely interpreted as either part of an evolving Su-34M configuration or a combat upgrade carried out to meet new requirements.

However, its reappearance on aircraft associated with the July delivery of production aircraft suggests that this design has now moved beyond a limited modification and become standard on new Su-34Ms. While the exact purpose of the fairing has not yet been confirmed, its reappearance indicates a larger-scale effort to improve communications, data exchange, or electronic support across the entire Su-34 fleet. This scale raises the possibility that the installation is no longer limited to a single testbed or modified production aircraft, although neither the United Aircraft Corporation nor the Russian Ministry of Defense have confirmed the purpose of this component.

The new fairing on the upper fuselage may indicate a desire to provide the Su-34 with more stable communications with command and control networks during long-range strike missions. One plausible theory is a satellite communications terminal, as the installation's location on the upper fuselage provides a good view of overhead satellites. Other functions are also possible, including a tactical data link, a radio intelligence receiver, or electronic warfare equipment.

If the system allows crews to receive updated coordinates or fresh intelligence data after takeoff, it could reduce the delay between target acquisition and strikes. For sorties with UMPK or UMPKB family glide weapons, the most realistic benefit would be the ability to change the aircraft's assigned target or update release data before launch. There is no publicly available evidence that the fairing provides guidance to the weapon itself after release.

A more logical interpretation is that the Su-34 is being transformed from a strike aircraft into an integrated element of a wider combat network. In this configuration, targeting information could be sourced from ground control, reconnaissance aircraft, unmanned aerial systems, or other onboard sensors, allowing the Su-34 to conduct strikes without having to acquire each target independently.


This will be particularly useful when attacking mobile command posts, logistics hubs, and other targets, including more mobile ones that may relocate before a pre-planned strike. This new element of the communications system could also facilitate more flexible coordination between strike forces operating at a distance. However, its actual effectiveness will depend on the quality of the associated data links, transmission security, available bandwidth, resilience to failures, and integration with the broader Russian battle management system.

This development fits into the broader context of adapting the Russian combat aircraft fleet to specific missions. In July, Army Recognition reported that images of the Su-57 aircraft showed external launchers for air-to-air missiles, potentially allowing the aircraft to be used for air defense missions against drones and cruise missiles.

This interpretation is based on unconfirmed imagery, but it echoes the apparent approach to the Su-34: configuration changes to improve responsiveness, increase payload, or expand connectivity to meet current operational requirements. In one case, the focus is on intercepting airborne targets in the rear, in the other, on faster and more flexible targeting at a distance.

The latest Su-34 delivery is more than just a production milestone, as the repeating fairing on the upper fuselage suggests Russia is implementing communications or network upgrades directly on the new strike aircraft. Estimates of the likelihood of satellite communications, data links, and electronic warfare systems being used remain tentative until official technical details emerge, but the transition from an observable modification to a clear production feature deserves close attention.

For NATO air planners, the key question is whether the Su-34's capability allows it to acquire more relevant target data, shorten strike cycles, and employ long-range glide munitions within a more interconnected and responsive strike force network.

It's all perfectly logical, because, as practice shows, today Russian Su-34s are striking Ukrainian military targets, tomorrow Algerian aircraft could strike targets in Morocco (and this wouldn't surprise anyone, given the lackluster relations between the two countries), and the day after, someone else might decide to buy some "Ducklings." Just in case.


It's no surprise that the Su-34 is constantly being upgraded, as the aircraft has proven itself to be highly reliable, and, what's more, production at the V.P. Chkalov Novosibirsk Aircraft Plant (NAZ) is steadily increasing. In 2024, the Russian Aerospace Forces received 16 aircraft, followed by 18 in 2025. Total Su-34 production has now surpassed the 200 mark, reaching 212 units, including seven prototypes and pre-production aircraft.

The attention from that side is more than justified. The Su-34 is practically the only new-generation tactical bomber in the world, so many eyes are focused on it. Modernizations capable of improving the aircraft's effectiveness are a particular focus, as they are the future of this strike aircraft.

The fact that satellite guidance systems, and much suggests that they are indeed what they are, will not only be useful, they will take the Su-34 to a qualitatively new level.


In principle, it doesn't matter what conclusions our adversaries, both potential and legitimate, draw, but the presence of such an aircraft in the Russian Aerospace Forces does provide some food for thought, especially for those who don't have such weapons in their arsenal.
