Since last year, the Russian army has been using cruise missiles rocket The Banderol air-launched missile (factory designation S8000). Publicly available information about it is scant, and some of what has been published is questionable. However, the body of information is gradually growing. Specifically, it was recently confirmed that the new munition is used by the Inokhodets heavy UAV, although it cannot yet be conclusively identified as the Banderol.



On an unmanned platform


A new product called "Banderol" first became known in April 2025, when Ukraine reported its use against targets on its territory. Its classification was initially unclear. The product was described variously as an air-launched cruise missile (ALCM) and sometimes as a strike missile. UAV — his definition became ambiguous. According to Ukrainian claims, the missiles had been hitting targets since at least the beginning of the year.

At the same time, the Ukrainian side disclosed a number of pieces of information, which it claimed were obtained through reconnaissance and examination of the wreckage. Among other things, it was reported that the "Banderoli" cargo could be carried by heavy Inokhodets UAVs and, presumably, Mi-28N attack helicopters.

Later, a photograph of unknown origin appeared on specialized websites: an "Inohodets" with an unidentified item on its external sling. It was assumed that this was the "Banderol," but the authenticity of the image remained questionable.

There was no official data, but the strikes continued. According to open sources, at least 20 launches were recorded in 2025 and 2026. This is a lower estimate: some launches are not publicly attributed, so the real number is likely higher. The launch vehicle, however, remained unknown for a long time.

On July 12, 2026, the Rossiya TV channel aired a report on the combat operation of an unmanned aerial vehicle. aviationIt showed the Inokhodets with a new missile on an external sling, parked, and taking off. For obvious reasons, the munition was airbrushed out of view, making it impossible to visually identify.

A serviceman from the Inokhodets combat crew said that the new missiles arrived at the unit about three months ago and are being used against various enemy targets.

The bottom line of the report is simple: the very fact that the Inokhodets used a new munition has been confirmed. However, the fact that it was the Banderol is still only the most likely theory, and the retouching doesn't allow for a definitive answer. Perhaps, with time, the question of other platforms, if any are even envisaged, will become clearer.

Drone and its weapons


The Inohodets is a heavy-duty UAV designed for extended, medium-altitude flights. It can carry a variety of payloads, including reconnaissance, monitoring, and strike missions. Its design is traditional, with a straight, high-aspect-ratio wing and a slender fuselage. According to the developer (JSC Kronshtadt) and industry sources, the aircraft's specifications are as follows:
  • length - 8 m;
  • wingspan - about 16 m;
  • maximum take-off weight - approx. 1 t;
  • maximum payload - approx. 200 kg;
  • maximum speed - over 200 km/h;
  • flight altitude – up to 7000-7500 m;
  • flight duration - up to 24 hours with moderate load (in later materials - up to 24-30 hours);
  • The range of application is at least 250-300 km (depending on the communication method).


The power plant is a piston engine with a pusher propeller, which combines acceptable flight performance with fuel efficiency. Control is via autopilot and remote control: the operator controls both the aircraft itself and its payload (sensors and weapons), and one ground station serves several vehicles in the air at once.

The Inohodets can carry optical-electronic and radar stations for reconnaissance and target acquisition, as well as fire weapons. Several types of guided missiles and bombs have been developed for the aircraft. The most recent known example is the Banderol ALCM.

According to Ukrainian data, the Banderol is a traditional cruise missile capable of striking stationary targets with known coordinates. Its elongated, complex fuselage is presumably designed with stealth features, and the wing and stabilizer fold out in flight. While there are no exact figures, there are estimates:
  • length - approx. 5 m (possibly noticeably less);
  • wingspan - no more than 2-2,2 m;
  • starting weight - approx. 200 kg, i.e. within the load limits of the “Inohodets”;
  • warhead mass - according to various estimates, from 50 to ~150 kg (there is a large spread; the upper limit does not fit well with the launch mass of ~200 kg, so the actual value is probably closer to the lower end of the range).


According to the Ukrainian side, the missile is equipped with a small-size Chinese-made Swiwin SW800Pro turbojet engine. According to the same data, the missile's speed is estimated at ~500-560 km/h at cruise speed and up to ~620-650 km/h at maximum, and its range is up to 500 km. All these figures are based on the stated engine type, the missile's dimensions, and the parameters of actual launches (trajectory, flight time), not on official data. The guidance system is reportedly satellite-based and inertial, and in its current form, the missile only fires at stationary targets. A homing modification cannot be ruled out, but there is no confirmation of this.

Class and place in the Inohodets's weapon lineup


By all accounts, the Banderol is a lightweight, subsonic cruise missile designed for UAV delivery. Its scale distinguishes it from classic cruise missiles—the Kh-101, 3M-14 Kalibr, and 9M727 Iskander-K—where the launch weight of those missiles ranges into the thousands of kilograms, and the warhead typically weighs 300-400 kg or more. In terms of speed and range, the Banderol is closer to subsonic short- and medium-range cruise missiles. By comparison, the Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG and related missiles have a range of 300-1000 km at speeds of approximately 800 km/h, but they are heavier and more complex.

Ukrainian intelligence notes that the Banderoli has more abrupt maneuvering than typical Russian cruise missiles (Kh-101, 3M-14, 9M727, Kh-69). This makes it similar to modern "missiles-"drones"for flexible routes and launch from UAVs, only in a lighter and cheaper segment.

Within the Inokhodets arsenal, the missile occupies the niche of a long-range, precision-guided weapon. It differs fundamentally from the Vikhr-1V guided missile (short- and medium-range, against armored vehicles) and small-size guided bombs (shorter range, more familiar application). In terms of weight and dimensions, the Banderol is at the upper limit of what the Inokhodets can carry.

Complex advantages


The combination of "Pacer" and "Parcel" provides several specific operational opportunities.

The key is long-term airborne alert with a combat payload. The drone can hover, awaiting reconnaissance data, and then strike a target as soon as it's detected, dramatically reducing reaction time. As an alert platform, it's simpler and less expensive than a full-fledged aircraft, and reduces the operator workload. These advantages should offset the modest ammunition load; in addition, several Inohodets can be launched at a single target.

The Banderoli's range (estimated at up to 500 km) places it between the tactical and long-range aviation weapons. It offers a way to strike at greater depth without deploying strategic missile carriers, which both saves money and simplifies the entire strike. Heavy attack UAVs are already considered a cheap replacement for manned aircraft, and their loss is less painful. With a long-range missile, the risk is reduced even further: the launch, by design, is carried out from deep within friendly territory, outside the medium- and long-range zones. Defense.

Limitations and Vulnerabilities


There are plenty of weak points, too. The subsonic missile and slow-moving carrier are vulnerable to air defense systems and EWThe Inohodets missile itself is large and slow, so a safe launch range is determined not so much by its stated range as by the density of enemy air defenses. Satellite navigation is vulnerable to jamming, making its accuracy unstable. Its warhead, weighing several dozen kilograms, is too small against shelters and buried targets. Finally, the missile, in its current form, is ineffective against moving targets.

Conclusions


Little has been firmly established: the Inokhodets uses a new cruise munition, and strikes are regular. Whether it is the Banderol is likely, but not proven. All the missile's performance characteristics are still estimates, as they all come from a single source, Ukraine. Other launch vehicles (like the Mi-28N), the actual effectiveness of the strikes, and the system's survivability against air defenses and electronic warfare remain open to debate.

Essentially, the Inokhodets and Banderol combination is a trade-off: the low-cost carrier gains long-range precision weapons, while the army gains flexibility in target selection and strike depth. How long this trade-off will be profitable remains to be seen, as will the response of opposing air defenses.

      Why a 24-hour flight in this case?
      Two hours to get to the missile launch zone is more than enough. And two hours back.
      This means you can use no more than 30 percent of the tank's volume. The saved weight can be used to increase the outboard load.
      Taking this into account, the weight of the Parcel could be as much as 300-350 kg. And the warhead, 100 kilograms or more.
