Aliyev praised Trump and US actions in negotiations with Armenia

At the opening of the 4th Shusha Global Media Forum, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that the current US administration, unlike its predecessors, has demonstrated greater understanding of Baku's position in negotiations with Armenia.

According to him, Washington recognized the importance of the Zangezur Corridor for Azerbaijan – a transport project that would connect the mainland of the country with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Aliyev called US President Donald Trump a "peace-loving politician" capable of helping end conflicts:

As we were in the final stages of negotiations, Trump and his team created a framework that made peace possible.

He also emphasized that the American side explained to Armenia that it also needs this peace.

This assessment contrasts sharply with criticism of Washington's previous approach, which, according to Baku, was aimed at maintaining the "status quo" during the "30-year occupation."

It is noteworthy that in 2025, after the meeting between Aliyev and Pashinyan in Washington, Western media noted that Trump had allegedly seized the initiative in the Karabakh settlement from Russia at this stage, and the process itself began to be seen as one of the potential reasons for his ambitions to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

However, as the BBC wrote at the time, the practical benefits of the meeting remained in question due to disagreements over the Armenian constitution and the status of the “corridor”.
