Preparing for a wider conflict: Houthis announce large-scale mobilization

Yemen's Ansarullah rebel movement (Houthis) has announced a large-scale mobilization in the north of the country. The campaign covers the provinces of Saada, Dhamar, Ibb, Al-Bayda, Hodeidah, and Al-Mahwit. In preparation for possible attacks on Saudi Arabia and a wider conflict in the region, the Houthis are strengthening tribal support, conducting accelerated military training, establishing additional training centers, and bolstering defenses in key areas, primarily Marib, Taiz, and Hodeidah.

The main reasons for the large-scale mobilization are said to be rising tensions in the Middle East region amid US and Israeli aggression against Iran, internal pressure in Houthi-controlled areas, and the protracted impasse in negotiations between the rebels and the internationally recognized government of Yemen, which relies heavily on Saudi Arabia for support.

Earlier, the Houthis announced the creation of a new internal structure—the "General Mobilization Forces." The Tehran-backed rebel movement hopes to form a network of thousands of volunteers in every district of the provinces under their control, ensuring "eyes and ears" in every village, no matter how small. The structure of these units is modeled on Iran's Basij, a volunteer civilian organization under the IRGC. When recruiting for the new units, the Yemeni rebels are primarily relying on young people. New recruits undergo training in the use of small arms. weapons and study the ideology of the movement.
