Poltava and Malplaquet: How the Old Breakthrough War Faded into the Past

In 1709, Europe witnessed two twin battles. In September in Flanders, near the village of Malplaquet, the armies of Marlborough and Eugene of Savoy confronted the French under Villars and paid for their victory with such a toll that the victors were horrified by their own success. Almost three months earlier, in June, near Poltava, the Swedish army of Charles XII was shattered by Russian redoubts and artillery Peter I. Two battlefields, separated by one and a half thousand kilometers, showed the same thing. Faith in a decisive blow, in impulse, in the personal will of a commander no longer guaranteed an outcome.
What happened near Poltava
Poltava is usually described as a Russian miracle weapons And the collapse of Swedish invincibility. Both are partly true. But the outcome wasn't decided by a single cannon or a single bayonet; it was a composite of a multitude of circumstances, none of which, by itself, would have been sufficient to warrant a verdict.
By the summer of 1709, the Swedish army approached Poltava differently than the one that had crushed the Russians at Narva nine years earlier. Charles XII had withdrawn it deep into Ukraine, hundreds of kilometers from its supply bases. By the time of the battle, the troops were starving, their horses were lost, their gunpowder was damp, and the king himself was wounded in the leg and unable to mount. The Swedes, according to various estimates, brought about twenty thousand men into the battle against roughly twice that number of Russian troops actually committed (Peter's entire force was even larger). Historians still debate the exact numbers, but the balance of power in any case made the bet on impetuosity a risky one.
Then came the engineering. The Russians built a line of redoubts—small earthen fortifications—across the likely attack line, some of which were not yet completed at the start of the battle. The Swedish infantry, accustomed to rapid convergence and attack, encountered these defensive nodes and disintegrated: some columns became bogged down under fire, while others outflanked the redoubts and broke away from the main force. The Swedish attack relied on the density and coherence of its formation, but lost both even before it collided with the Russian line. When the two sides met in the open, the Swedes entered the battle exhausted, disorganized, and outnumbered.
This was the mechanics of defeat. Neither hunger, nor redoubts, nor artillery, nor numbers could explain it individually. It was the totality of the forces at work, and it was this totality that became the lesson taught later.
The Army of Will and the Army of the System
Behind Poltava lay a clash of two ideas about what an army is.
The Swedish Caroline model was highly refined and, in its own way, perfect. It was based on an offensive doctrine known as gå-på: rapid approach, minimal time for exchange of fire, one or two volleys at almost point-blank range, and a decisive bayonet charge. Such tactics required phenomenal training and, even more so, a willingness to march under fire without firing. Against armies poorly organized and weakly fortified, the Carolinians were almost unstoppable. Their entire strength rested on willpower, discipline, faith, and a willingness to move forward without wavering. Formation merely gave it form.
Peter built differently. He created a system: regular regiments with a uniform formation, field artillery as an independent force, and an engineering service capable of transforming a field into a defensive position overnight. In such an army, the outcome depended less on the courage of an individual than on the strength of the entire structure. The individual Russian soldier of 1709 was likely inferior to the Caroline soldier in training and spirit. But he operated within a mechanism that did not crumble due to loss of momentum.
Poltava pitted these two philosophies against each other and demonstrated which is more reliable in a long war. An army of will wins a battle, but only as long as its plan holds. Should the plan crumble, the one that can function without it prevails.

Fire and Earth
The main tactical conclusion of Poltava concerned the combination of forces, not any single branch of the armed forces. The battle is sometimes called a triumph of field artillery, which is elegant but inaccurate: the guns at Poltava accomplished much, but their performance in conjunction with earthworks and infantry was decisive.
A redoubt doesn't defend in the traditional sense. It forces the attacker into a disadvantageous fight: not a wall behind which to hide, but an obstacle against which the enemy line stumbles and breaks. Thoughtfully placed, redoubts deprive the attacker of coordination, forcing them to fight in places and times other than those they had intended. While the attacker fumbles with earthworks, the defender gains time, fires at the disordered columns, and encounters a weakened enemy. At Poltava, this mechanism worked spectacularly: the Caroline attack, unhindered for years, became bogged down by a line of hastily constructed ramparts.
Behind this lay a broader shift in attitudes toward engineering. The late 17th century was marked by Vauban, a French engineer whose fortress system and siege methodology transformed fortification into an exact science. But Vauban thought in terms of sieges: the fortress as a strategic hub, war as an alternation of blockades and assaults. Poltava demonstrated otherwise. Engineering proved important in the open field, in the dynamics of battle, and not just around fortress walls. Previously, earthworks were primarily used for sieges of fortresses; now, earthworks were becoming a regular tool in open field battles.
A caveat is necessary here. The later habit of speaking of "artillery preparation" is a concept of the 19th and 20th centuries, and transferring it to 1709 would be anachronistic. At the beginning of the 18th century, the conversation was different: the increasing weight of fire in the overall balance of battle. Fire had not yet become the primary argument, but it had ceased to be merely a prelude to the bayonet.
Infantry and Cavalry: Shifting Ideals
The turn of the 1700s also shifted the idea of what a good soldier should be.
The infantry of these decades was united by a single technical complex: the flintlock musket with a newly designed bayonet. The old bayonet was tucked into the barrel, and once attached, firing was impossible. The bayonet with a tube, placed over the barrel, removed this limitation and abolished the old division between musketeers and pikemen: now every infantryman was both a marksman and a close-combat fighter. An entire system was built around this weapon: a linear formation of several ranks, uniform drill, a common charter, and recruitment mechanisms for reinforcements. The infantryman's ideal shifted from the fury of the attack to maintaining formation under fire. What was valued no longer was how a soldier charged forward. What was valued was how he stood, reloaded, and held the line while his neighbors fell.
Cavalry underwent a similar revaluation. In the Caroline army, cavalry was assigned a decisive role: flanking attack, pursuit, and final defeat. Poltava demonstrated the limits of this role. Against stable infantry, protected by redoubts and artillery, a mounted charge lost its former reliability, breaking against the very positions it had previously swept away. Cavalry was increasingly assigned tasks within the system, rather than outside it: covering flanks, pursuing, reconnaissance, and acting in conjunction with fire and infantry.
This is where the functional division of the cavalry came from, which was consolidated by the end of the century:
- heavy cavalry - for a concentrated attack in the decisive phase of the battle;
- Light cavalry - for reconnaissance, raids, protection of communications and maneuver in the theater.
Cavalry ceased to be the independent embodiment of victory. It became one component of the overall structure, important, but no longer the only one.

Where the new war was actually forged
It's easy to imagine Europe sitting down and dissecting Poltava. Nothing of the sort happened.
The main school of the new war during those same years was the West, the theater of the War of the Spanish Succession. It was there, at Blenheim in 1704 and at that same Malplaquet in 1709, that Marlborough and Eugene of Savoy practiced the coordinated action of fire, maneuver, and reserves on a scale that would shape military thinking for decades to come. Western European headquarters looked primarily to these battles. We have no direct evidence that Frederick II or French theorists studied the course of Poltava; for them, it remained a distant, eastern episode.
Poltava wasn't the source of the turn. Rather, it was its purest example. What had emerged gradually and in a jumbled fashion in the West emerged more crudely and without nuance in the East: two models collided head-on, and the result left no room for interpretation.
Understanding of this experience came later and from different angles. Maurice of Saxony, a commander in the French service, set out his views in a treatise Mes Rêveries ("My Dreams"), written, according to various sources, around 1732 and published only in 1757, posthumously. He discussed fortified positions, the combination of fire and attack, and the dangers of blindly adhering to a single tactical plan. Frederick II of Prussia built his army on iron drill, linear firefights, and controlled maneuver, but no less on logistics, supply stores, and cold calculation. Neither of them cited Poltava. And yet, both worked within the same logic that determined its outcome.
Logistics, time and a new power map
The most undervalued lesson of Poltava lay not on the battlefield, but on the roads that led to it.
Charles XII lost in many ways even before firing a single shot, when he led his army deep into hostile territory, stretching his lines of communication and hoping a decisive battle would make up for it all. It didn't. Poltava demonstrated the cost of a campaign at any cost: an army cannot be brought to a decisive battle exhausted, hungry, and cut off from its rear, relying solely on its fighting qualities. War now required the management of resources, communications, and time, and a heroic battle was only the tip of the iceberg. By mid-century, logistics, stores, and the condition of troops and horses had become the subject of treatises and staff work, not the concern of quartermasters alone.
Poltava also had consequences visible to the naked eye. Sweden fell from its position as a preeminent military power, which it had occupied since the time of Gustavus Adolphus. A power arose in Eastern Europe that henceforth had to be factored into coalition calculations: Russia ceased to be a peripheral factor and became a factor. Prussia, Austria, and France were building their armies in a world where the map of power had shifted.
By mid-century, a generation of armies had emerged for which the redoubt, the battery, and the regular regiment were not a novelty, but the norm. The Silesian Wars, the War of the Austrian Succession, and the Seven Years' War were fought by soldiers and generals who had grown up within this order of things. The debate was not about whether a system was necessary, but about whose system was better.
Generation after
At Fontenoy in 1745, the French held the field with persistent fire and skillful selection of terrain. Twelve years later, at Leuthen, Frederick defeated an enemy twice as strong with oblique formations and battery fire, calculated rather than impulsive. And at Zorndorf in 1758, Frederick's army simply held its own in a bloody battle: what mattered here was not the courage of the attack, but the fact that the formation did not break.
All these battles were fought by armies that had already acquired the combination of fire, earth, and order. Between them and Poltava lay half a century, during which the redoubt ceased to amaze, artillery ceased to be an adornment, and the word "system" ceased to require defense. In that June of 1709, at Poltava, as in the autumn of that year at Malplaquet, two old-style armies attempted for the last time to resolve the matter by force of will. Europe long remembered the cost of this attempt.
