The US Armed Forces have experienced yet another man-made emergency. Accidents for various reasons have been a regular occurrence in the US Navy recently.

Another incident occurred on June 22, but the US Navy only reported it now. At least 64 US sailors were poisoned by exhaust fumes from a diesel generator on the Ohio-class strategic nuclear submarine USS Nebraska, according to the US naval publication Navy Times.



The incident occurred during a routine watch on the submarine, which at that time was moored at the pier of the Pacific naval base. fleet Kitsap-Bangor in Silverdale, Washington. At the time of the poisoning, the service members were near a functioning backup diesel generator that had been started for routine maintenance.

The injured submarine sailors sought medical attention. Symptoms of poisoning include coughing, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. All crew members near the diesel generator experienced irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. Six sailors were hospitalized and have since been discharged. The others did not require hospital treatment.

According to Navy officials, the diesel generator onboard does not affect the submarine's nuclear reactor and is in good working order. However, the US Navy command did not respond to a Navy Times inquiry about the cause of the sailors' poisoning. A Navy spokesperson merely stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and appropriate action will be taken based on its findings.

About "us": every submariner MUST have a PDA, PDU, or something similar "dangling" on his side while on board, but it serves the same purpose—to ensure breathing in gas-filled compartments during a fire, smoke, etc. All of our submariners are subconsciously instructed on the rules for using eye and respiratory protection "in case of an emergency." We have a PDA (PDU) at our disposal for initial survivability measures. It's an isolated type with a breathing bag and regeneration cartridge. EVERYONE inside the submarine has one. It lasts for 10 minutes during heavy work and up to 40 minutes at rest. If anything happens, strap it on and go!
            IP-6 - basically the same thing, but more thoroughly and lasting longer. Not directly accessible to the crew. They're stored somewhere.
            IDA59-M. This is for diving from depths of up to 100 meters. It contains an oxygen cylinder, an AGK (nitrogen, helium, and oxygen mixture) cylinder, and a regeneration system. It's closed. It's a bit heavy. It'll definitely last for up to an hour. Each crew member has one, and it's practically immediately accessible. Everyone knows where their IDA is.
            The SHDA (barrel breathing apparatus) is a mask with a long hose in a red box. They're crammed into every combat post, with extras. It's powered by the high-pressure air system. But it's turned off at the base. There's one valve per compartment. Turn it, it takes two seconds. Then sit there until you're so thirsty you die. The air is completely dry.
            So, in the event of a "chemical alarm" or "burning smell in the compartment," submariners have several breathing options: mobile, stationary, and heavier. This will definitely allow them to determine the cause and make a decision.
            So the "Americans" simply gave up on the service. And got their fill.
