The German Armed Forces possess a significant fleet of armored support vehicles. Specifically, there are approximately 150 vehicles in service of two types: the aging Bergepanzer 2 and the newer Bergepanzer 3 (as of 2026, following recent decommissionings and transfers abroad). For the first time in over three decades, since the early 1990s, new vehicles of this class are planned to be ordered. The batch of Bergepanzer 3A2 Büffel vehicles is intended to partially replenish the fleet and significantly enhance it.



New order


The need to purchase new armored recovery vehicles (ARVs) had been discussed in Germany for several years, after which the Bundeswehr began negotiations with a contractor. It's worth noting that the German army hasn't ordered new ARVs since the early 1990s; until now, it has been able to make do with repairing and upgrading existing vehicles.

On June 23, 2026, Rheinmetall announced a contract for the construction and delivery of modern Bergepanzer 3A2 (BPz 3A2) armored recovery vehicles, or Büffel. The German Armed Forces are seeking 23 vehicles of this type. The production cost has not yet been announced.

Rheinmetall will soon prepare the production line and then begin assembly. The first vehicles are scheduled to be delivered to the customer in 2027, with the final batch expected in 2029.

The new ARVs will be deployed to the repair units of armored units. Their fleet has been significantly reduced in recent years, and now it needs to be rebuilt. The challenge isn't just quantitative: the new equipment must be qualitatively superior to the previous one. A comparison with the vehicles being decommissioned (see below) will clarify just how superior this is.

In repair units


Let us recall that since the end of the seventies the FRG army has been mastering new basic combat Tanks Leopard 2. At that time, it had a significant number of Bergepanzer 2 ARVs, built on the chassis of the older Leopard 1 tank. Despite modernization, these vehicles no longer met current requirements, and a decision was made to develop a new vehicle.

At the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK; since 1992, part of Rheinmetall) developed a new armored recovery vehicle (ARV). It was accepted into service under the designations Bergepanzer 3 (BPz 3) and Büffel (Buffalo). The vehicle was built on the Leopard 2 MBT chassis and was designed to withstand the loads typical of recovering vehicles of this class.

In 1992, a contract for serial production was signed. The Bundeswehr ordered 75 vehicles; the Netherlands Army purchased another 25 units (under the Dutch designation Bergingstank 600 kN, referring to the winch's pulling force). Production of the 100 vehicles (regardless of the customer) was split between MaK in Kiel (55 units) and Krauss-Maffei in Munich (45 units); Krauss-Maffei later became part of the KMW (now KNDS) association. Subsequently, orders were received from a number of other European and Asian countries, primarily operators of German tanks.

The German ground forces received the ordered ARVs by 1997. Almost all of this equipment is still in service. The vehicles were repaired when necessary, and over time, a modernization project was implemented that increased their effectiveness.

Despite its relatively large production run, the BPz 3 never fully replaced the previous model of ARV. As of early 2022, the Bundeswehr had 95 older Bergepanzer 2s and 75 newer Büffels (according to The Military Balance 2022, IISS). No refurbishment or restructuring of the fleet was planned at that time.

Aid to Ukraine changed the situation. In early 2023, Germany transferred tanks and support equipment to Kyiv, including 21 BPz 2 and two BPz 3 tanks. Initially, it was assumed that this would not impact the Bundeswehr's own repair capabilities, but the army subsequently changed its position: the replenishment of the donated equipment is cited as the direct reason for the new order (according to Rheinmetall and industry publications). This is how the contract was created. Rheinmetall will build 23 new BPz 3A2 vehicles, which are scheduled to be delivered to units by the end of the decade.

Technical potential


The Bergepanzer 3 Büffel is an armored vehicle with specialized equipment designed for the recovery, evacuation, and repair of military vehicles. It primarily services Leopard 2 series tanks and self-propelled guns. artillery PzH 2000 installations.

The Buffalo is built on the Leopard-2 chassis. The main hull, powerplant, and chassis have been retained. A new armored cabin has increased the hull's height, and new components have been installed in the space where the former fighting compartment once stood.

The BPz 3's dimensions are generally close to those of the baseline MBT. Its unladen weight is less than 55 tons. Its protection is comparable to that of the Leopard 2, allowing it to operate close to the front lines. However, recovery operations are slow, and the protection does not make the vehicle invulnerable to direct fire. Thanks to the retained 1500 hp engine, its performance remains unchanged.

The following parameters correspond to Rheinmetall documentation and equipment manufacturer specifications.

A bulldozer blade for excavation work is mounted on the lower front of the hull; it also serves as a support when pulling out equipment and when using the crane. A crane is mounted on the starboard side of the hull. The boom's slewing ring rotates 270°; the boom can be raised over a wide range of angles. The maximum lifting capacity reaches 30 t (metric) with a minimum boom reach of approximately 90 cm. As the reach increases to the maximum of 4,8 m, the lifting capacity drops to 7,3 t.

The machine is equipped with two winches. The main winch, a Rotzler Treibmatic TR 650/3, is equipped with a 33 mm diameter rope and is 160 m long. Without a pulley system, it generates a force of 35 tf (343 kN), and with a triple pulley system, it can generate up to 105 tf. There is also a Rotzler HZ 010 auxiliary winch with 230 m of 7,2 mm diameter rope.

The ARV carries a set of tools for repairing armored vehicles. Spare parts, including complete powertrain assemblies, are stored on the rear platform of the hull. For self-defense, the BPz 3 is equipped with a 7,62mm MG3 machine gun on an open mount and a set of smoke grenade launchers.

The crew consists of three people: a commander, a driver, and a mechanic. The crew performs some operations under armor protection, but rigging and repair work require crew members to go outside. Working conditions have improved with each upgrade. For example, in 2012, the SPECTUS all-round surveillance system, based on video cameras, was introduced, simplifying maneuvering and cargo handling.

The new BPz 3A2, ordered in 2026, represents a major upgrade. According to Rheinmetall, it will feature an upgraded crane with a lifting capacity of up to 32 tons (metric) for handling heavier NATO armored vehicles, as well as digital systems. This is the standard to be produced under the new contract.

Quantity and quality of


For the first time since the early 1990s, the Bundeswehr is ordering a new production version of the Bergepanzer 3 family of armored recovery vehicles. Between 2027 and 2029, it will receive the vehicles, which are designed to fulfill several missions simultaneously.

The first is the fleet size. In 2023, the German Army delivered 23 recovery vehicles abroad and is now ordering the same number of new ones. However, there's no direct "one-for-one" replenishment here: of the 23 vehicles delivered, 21 were aging BPz 2s and only 2 were BPz 3s. This means the fleet isn't being replenished so much as renewed: the old equipment is leaving, and new equipment is arriving. The coincidence of numbers (23 delivered, 23 ordered) can be attributed to a desire to maintain the same numbers. It can also be explained by budget constraints: it's possible that the 23 vehicles are just the first batch, with new ones to follow. You can't tell everything from a single contract.

The qualitative aspect is more obvious. The Bergepanzer 2 was long outdated and had serious limitations, and their joint operation with the latest Leopard 2 modifications is practically impossible. Modern BPz 3A2 tanks, with their current performance level, are fully capable of supporting current and future MBTs.

Another thing that remains unclear is whether these vehicles will be sufficient. The available data doesn't indicate how many ARVs are required for the current Leopard 2 fleet, both in terms of standards and actual production, meaning it's impossible to assess whether the order for 23 vehicles meets the actual need.

Ultimately, this single contract addresses several problems for the Bundeswehr and provides reserves for the future. However, implementation is contingent on several conditions: long-stopped production must be restored, deadlines and budget must be met, and all this must be accomplished against the backdrop of Rheinmetall's heavy workload with other defense contracts. Each of these conditions, in the current environment, could complicate contract fulfillment.
