Combat use of the Banderol missiles

In 2025, the Russian combat aviation received and began to use a new winged rocket "Banderol." Reports of its use subsequently became regular. A combination of characteristics helped. Its flight and combat performance were quite high, while its production was comparatively simple.
Let's make it clear right away and not repeat it again. There is no official Russian technical documentation for the "Banderoli." Almost everything known about its characteristics and combat use comes from leaks, Ukrainian intelligence reports, journalistic and analytical reconstructions, and OSINT analyses. Any "precise" performance characteristics are currently estimates, and this is worth keeping in mind.
Secret development
In recent years, for obvious reasons, the Russian defense industry has been reluctant to disclose promising developments. Some models are only revealed after production and combat use have begun, and often come from Ukraine first.
That's exactly what happened with "Banderol." In April 2025, Ukrainian sources reported a new threat. Allegedly, since the beginning of the year, the Russian army had been using some kind of attack UAV of an unknown model. It was then that the code name "Banderol" was first used.
Ukrainian intelligence identified the Kronshtadt group as the developer. This theory was picked up by a number of Russian publications, but neither the developer nor the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed it. There is also indirect evidence in its favor. Kronshtadt manufactures the Orion UAV (export production name "Inohodets"; they are the same machine), which is said to be the missile's primary carrier.
Early reports, however, raised questions. For a long time, Ukrainian specialists couldn't even determine the general appearance of the "Banderoli." Infographics depicted "flying wings" and then conventional aerodynamic designs. At first, they talked about a strike UAV, then they started calling it a cruise missile.
Combat application
The sequence of events can be reconstructed as follows. According to enemy data, the first launches took place in early 2025. In April 2025, Ukrainian sources reported them, initially mistaking the missile for a strike UAV. By spring 2025, the picture became clearer. It became clear that a new cruise missile had entered service with the Russian Air Force. There is no official designation, so the "Ukrainian" name "Banderol" remains in use.
Little is known about the very first launches. How many there were, what their targets were, and what their results were was never disclosed.
Subsequently, the Ukrainian side complained about further launches on several occasions. As early as 2026, in early June, there were reports of hits on targets in the Kharkiv region, and by the middle of that month, according to Ukrainian data and OSINT reports, the missile was used in massive strikes against Kyiv. The enemy has not disclosed the results, and this silence is interpreted in two ways: either as a sign of a significant hit or as a sign that the damage was minor.
They're also trying to keep count. The OSINT project LostArmour estimates around 20 massive strikes involving "Panderoli" [illegible text]. This figure is unverified, as it was not possible to verify it against publicly available database cards. So, this is an estimate by the OSINT community, nothing more.

And yet, it's clear that the "Banderol" is used regularly, both individually and in massive raids, and in the latter case, together with various UAVs and other missile models.
The geography of the strikes is also interesting. The first missiles were used against targets in the Odessa region, followed by strikes in the outskirts of Odessa. In the spring of 2025, the first strikes were reported in the Mykolaiv region, and later in the Dnipropetrovsk region. In recent weeks, the strikes have extended to Kharkiv and Kyiv.
The strike map shows the effective range, but not the maximum. The maximum range is derived from the stated specifications, and the map is of no help. And here's what's striking: most of the known attacks occurred on targets near the Black Sea coast. The explanation is more tactical than mysterious. Ukrainian specialists estimate the range of the "Banderol" missile at 450-500 km; if so, then targets in the Odessa and Mykolaiv regions are significantly closer to the maximum range, and the missile's radius is far from fully utilized. Targets further away seem to be more often targeted by cruise missiles and other types of UAVs, while the "Banderol" missile is launched where it offers the best range-to-cost ratio.
Technical potential
At first, the enemy described the Banderol as a "flying wing," but then the missile was reclassified as an air-launched cruise missile. It appears the latter version is closer to the truth.
The Banderol is a traditional-looking ALCM. It features a stretched, complexly shaped fuselage (possibly to reduce radar signature), as well as fold-out wings and stabilizers with rudders.
Dimensions and weight, according to open estimates, are approximately as follows (all figures are approximate and not factory ones):
- length - approx. 5 m;
- fuselage diameter - 300 mm;
- wingspan - 2–2,2 m (folding);
- starting weight - no more than 200–250 kg;
- The combat load ranges from ~50 to ~150 kg. The discrepancy is likely due to the fact that some sources cite the full warhead weight (up to ~150 kg), while others cite only the explosive mass (around 49–50 kg, which is close to the lower limit).
The engine is presumably a turbojet, and analysts are calling it the Chinese Swiwin SW800Pro-A95. This conclusion is based on a comparison of publicly available photos and parameters of commercial engine models; no official confirmation has been made, so an independent technical review is needed. The estimated flight performance depends on the engine:
- cruising speed - approx. 520–560 km/h;
- maximum speed – up to 620–650 km/h;
- flight range: 450–500 km.
The "Banderol" missile strikes stationary targets with predetermined coordinates. It is guided to its target by an autopilot and combined inertial-satellite navigation (GLONASS/GPS/BeiDou) with a jam-resistant antenna, which is believed to provide decent accuracy.

The primary carrier is said to be the Inokhodets heavy reconnaissance and attack UAV (some sources refer to it as the Orion). The combination, based on its weight, dimensions, and intended use, is convincing, and is confirmed by several sources, including Russian ones, but these are still expert assessments rather than official performance specifications. Other platforms are also possible, particularly the Mi-28N helicopter. This is purely speculative for now: there are no launches from the Mi-28N, no photos of the sling, and no official statements.
Flexibility and efficiency
Of course, not everything the Ukrainian side says is true. But taken together, the data adds up to a plausible picture: the "Banderol" exists, is mass-produced, and is used in special operations.
The niche of the new ALCM is clear - between tactical missiles (Kh-29, Kh-31) and weapons Strategic aviation (Kh-555, Kh-101/102). This means the Aerospace Forces gain a greater range than tactical missiles, but without the need for long-range aviation, since the carrier is a UAV.
The "Banderol" became a UAV weapon, making strikes cheaper. An unmanned carrier is significantly superior to a manned aircraft: it's cheaper per flight hour, doesn't put the crew at risk, and airfields are easier to access. Therefore, the combination of a UAV and a cheap ALCM is convenient when mass destruction is needed.
But there is a downside. A subsonic, stealthy missile at speeds of around 550 km/h is too slow for a modern Defense — the target is vulnerable. How far it will fly and hit depends on how tightly the targets are covered. Hence the massive combined air strikes: the "Pancake" is deployed in a single package with other UAVs and missiles to overwhelm the defenses. And there are plenty of replacements, since the Russian army has plenty of strike aircraft. drones for the same tasks, and a wide range of products allows you to select ammunition for each target based on characteristics and price.
The "Banderol" and similar weapons weren't invented by chance: long-range, accurate, and yet inexpensive air defense weapons are especially in demand right now. They're already being used extensively. But how much damage they'll do will be determined not so much by the missile itself, but by what meets it over its target.
