Invisible Weapon: Happy Holidays, Navy Miners


June 20th is the Day of the Specialist of the Mine and Torpedo Service of the Russian Navy. Behind this modest name lies almost two centuries of Russian mine school and people whose unnoticed work can stop an entire fleet without a single shot.



Summer 1855, Gulf of Finland. The Allied squadron is heading for Kronstadt, on the outskirts of the Russian capital. Suddenly, invisible charges begin to explode under the ships' sides. Several vessels sustain hull damage. The formidable navy, accustomed to dictating terms at any sea, assesses the risk and turns away. Without a decisive battle. It was these events that formed the basis for the professional holiday of naval miners.

A date with character


Mine and Torpedo Service Specialist Day was established by Order No. 253 of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy on July 15, 1996. The date, June 20, was associated with the events of the Crimean War in the Baltic: in the summer of 1855, ships of the British squadron first struck minefields near Kronstadt, and this day was designated as a holiday.

That summer, an allied squadron attempted to put pressure on Russian bases. But as they approached Kronstadt, the British squadron encountered minefields, and several ships were blown up. The mines were weak at the time, and they didn't cause any fatal losses. But the psychological impact was far more important than the physical damage: they seriously frightened the enemy. Despite blowing up several minefields, the squadron never launched an assault. It turns out, curiously, that a miner does his best work when there's no battle at all. The barrier is laid, the enemy doesn't risk it, and it never comes to shooting.

Who invented the mine?


There is a persistent belief that Russia has always been catching up with someone in military technology. With mines weapons everything is exactly the opposite.

In 1807, Russian scientist Pavel Schilling first demonstrated the detonation of an underwater mine using an electrical impulse, via a wire, from the shore. This was practically science fiction in the early 19th century. And in the 1830s and 1840s, German-born Russian physicist Boris Jacobi created the world's first reliable galvanic shock mine.

It was ingeniously designed and, frankly, almost barbarically simple to the modern eye. The charge was anchored underwater. Fragile glass tubes filled with acid protruded from above. The ship would brush against a tube, the glass would break, the acid would complete a circuit, and an explosion would follow. No electronics, just pure chemistry and mechanics. And it was Jacobi mines that met the Allied squadron at Kronstadt. The very same barrier that turned the British fleet away was the brainchild of Russian engineering.

From a tube of acid to a mine that counts


Almost two centuries have passed, and the glass tube has evolved into a system that's difficult to fool. The modern bottom mine, unlike the Jacobi contact mine, no longer waits for direct contact: it listens to the water around it.

This mine simultaneously analyzes the ship's acoustic noise, its magnetic field, changes in water pressure, and vibration patterns. Simple noise alone won't fool it. Moreover, it has a multiplicity device: a counter that skips a preset number of targets. The minelayer can set the algorithm: skip the first ships and detonate, say, at the sixth. The combat escort minesweepers will pass unmolested, and the explosion will reach the main target in the squadron. Traditional minesweeping is largely ineffective here: the minesweeper simply lets the mine pass without revealing itself.

Torpedo weapons are also being developed. According to publicly available data, the UET-1 Ichthyosaur electric torpedo, a 533mm caliber, has replaced Soviet designs. Its electric motor leaves virtually no heat or bubble trail, and its claimed speed is up to 50 knots (approximately 93 km/h), with a range of up to 25 km. Thermal torpedoes of the Fizik family have a longer range: reported ranges of up to 50 km. The supercavitating Shkval travels underwater within a gas cavity and accelerates to 200 knots—that's about 370 km/h underwater—a fantastic speed for an underwater weapon.

Behind all this technology is a dedicated person. A mine and torpedo service specialist is responsible for the storage and condition of underwater weapons, organizes firings, trains crews, participates in testing new models, sets up barriers, and defuses old, dangerous munitions. The work is quiet and meticulous. There's no room for error here: no one will give you a second chance.

Happy holiday


A miner rarely finds himself at the center of a spectacular picture. His weapon is invisible by its very nature, and the best result is a fairway through which his ships sailed undisturbed. But it is precisely this invisibility that constitutes professional honor.

It was written here on the Military District before the North-Eastern Military District that there's practically no development, with only outdated Soviet-era designs and developments from that era barely brought to small-scale production. But if you read "Foreign Military Review" and "Equipment and Armament," you'll find countless articles about how foreign countries are developing new mines and torpedoes and conducting exercises on their use and disposal. So, what's our situation in this regard?
