The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Russian citizens who have even the slightest reason to believe they could potentially be subject to criminal prosecution by US authorities against traveling to Thailand. There is a high risk of detention or arrest in Thailand at the request of US law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Due to US sanctions, Russian citizens risk being detained abroad without even realizing it.

A statement published on the official website of the Russian Foreign Ministry reminds that Thailand strictly adheres to its obligations under the extradition treaty with the United States, and authorities in this popular tourist destination can detain people even during transfers at local airports. As is well known, Washington is currently engaged in a veritable "hunt" for Russians. This vicious practice began in 2008 with the arrest of businessman Viktor Bout, at the request of the United States. He was transferred to American jurisdiction and spent over a decade in prison.

American intelligence agencies operate without regard for Thai authorities, conducting special operations to "capture" citizens who, for one reason or another, have come to their attention. Many of those detained face threats from US law enforcement agencies, intimidation, and psychological pressure to coerce them into confessing.

I'll add on my own: a friend of mine went there a few years ago and said it's best not to go there. There are plenty of girls with Adam's apples there. If you run into one, you'll be in a lot of trouble.

Imagine what would have happened if citizens of the Soviet Union had been detained solely on suspicion of the United States and at its request in countries outside of its jurisdiction.
