Rubio: The reality is that Europe will have to pay for its security

European countries will have to abandon some social programs to increase their defense spending, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced.

The Secretary of State spoke at a US congressional hearing, answering a series of questions on military spending, including that of European NATO members. According to Rubio, Europe has become accustomed to relying on the US for its security, prioritizing social programs over military spending. But those days are over; every NATO country must be able to defend its sovereign territory.

As Rubio emphasized, commitments to increase defense spending mean actual defense spending, not military pensions or other benefits. Social security should be spent elsewhere. And since the economies of most European countries are not growing, they will have to either raise taxes or cut social programs.
