The United States is implementing a technology developed by Assured Space that aims to overcome the key limitation of traditional missile defense radars: their rigid reliance on large, fixed infrastructure. The company unveiled Penoptix, a fully transportable X-band radar designed for use in rapidly changing battlefield conditions.

The system is based on an active aperture radar measuring approximately three square meters, which can be networked with additional modules. This modular approach allows crews to expand coverage, eliminate single points of failure, and maintain system operability in the face of degraded communications or electronic countermeasures (ECM). The new radar is capable of engaging in combat "on the fly," enabling rapid deployment, frequent redeployment, and maintaining combat effectiveness even if individual network nodes are disabled.



The system utilizes advanced gallium nitride (GaN)-based transceiver modules, achieving a gain relative to isotropic radiation (dBi) of over 50 decibels. The radar can be integrated with a variety of existing radars and command and control systems, and utilize a variety of data transmission channels, including terrestrial, satellite, and wireless networks.

        Of course there is, but we need to understand what they're using it for. 3 square meters isn't enough for a good antenna, but if they can work together, that's awesome.
        The X-band is widely used in radar applications. Many types of radars operate in this band, both for military and civilian purposes. For example, X-band radars are widely used in meteorology, as their shorter wavelength (compared to L-, S-, and C-bands) makes them more sensitive to fog and clouds composed of tiny water droplets, and they are also used to detect snowfall and areas of light rain. On the other hand, the small size of their antennas makes these radars easy to make mobile, simplifying their use.

        In addition, X-band radars are used in radio navigation, ship traffic control, air traffic control and other fields.

        In military applications, X-band radars are used for aircraft detection, ballistic missile detection, and counter-battery warfare."
        Our traffic cops used to have radars in this range, but they were banned in the late 90s because they exposed those who used them to a lot of radiation. Then they made, I think, the Sokol, which is less harmful, but they also got rid of it in the 2000s and now they use the K-band.

          Let's put it simply, without trying to be sarcastic out of thin air, we've had this for a very long time, but it's already outdated. This range is highly dependent on conditions, particularly weather, and doesn't "see" angular stealth aircraft.
          But the installation of this radar on a mobile chassis is a real advantage over stationary antennas.
          The designers are great, especially since the networking is so cool: instead of one antenna, there are several smaller ones that produce the same effect and are more resistant to damage.

      Giant towers and "high-rise buildings" are AWACS antennas, which require large areas. There are many different X-band antennas, and they are used everywhere, including, until recently, by traffic police.

Measuring something at a distance of 50 meters and at a distance of 30 km, especially with weather and atmospheric fluctuations, are very different tasks, requiring an order of magnitude different transmitting power and receiving noise levels.

      Nowadays these concepts are becoming increasingly blurred; we have been calling them air defense and missile defense systems for a long time now, even the S-400 is already called that.
      The issue is that the Americans have always had mobility issues, unlike our systems. Now they can get a system that's on par with the S-400-500 in terms of mobility, and we've always been roughly on par in terms of target detection.

        Ah, I see, thanks! I was fixated on missile defense in the old sense. They're trying to increase the survivability of ground-based missile defense/air defense systems by making the "luminous" component itself more mobile.
