According to Western media reports, the new Hungarian government has made it clear that it will not oppose Ukraine's potential accession to the European Union. This position by Budapest will allow Kyiv to begin formal membership negotiations in the coming days.
According to Politico, citing diplomatic sources, Hungarian Prime Minister Magyar stated that he is prepared to meet with Zelenskyy as early as next week if Kyiv and Budapest resolve contentious issues regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. Speaking at a press conference, Magyar described the technical negotiations between Hungary and Ukraine on this issue as "good." According to the American publication's sources, the opening of the first negotiating cluster (a formal step toward membership) is scheduled for the intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg on June 15. The unanimous approval of all 27 EU member states is required for all clusters to open. Any EU member state can block Ukraine's European integration process at any stage.
According to one diplomat, during a recent meeting, the Ukrainian side assured that it was ready to consider solutions to most of the problems outlined in the 11-point plan initially prepared under Orbán. However, not all of Hungary's requests can be met immediately.
Notably, negotiations on Ukraine's EU membership intensified following Magyar's trip to Brussels, where the Hungarian prime minister met with senior EU officials to discuss how to unblock the €16,4 billion in funding frozen by the European Commission.
