Logistics lockdown: why the road to Crimea can't be closed with barbecues

Supplying materiel involves all rear services work: preparing transport, transporting it from warehouses and bases to destinations, unloading it, and replenishing what's been expended and lost in units. But the principle is clear: the more supply lines are cut, the fewer troops are capable of attacking, and at some point, the offensive grinds to a halt. The rear is often referred to as "support," something behind and secondary. In reality, without it, the front lines don't fire or move.
Specific funds have been allocated for the program, and they are spent according to a clear principle: the most effective teams receive funding, then the state issues centralized tenders for large-scale projects. This isn't hot air. The application has a financial basis, and it must be taken seriously.
What the enemy is doing
The primary tool of the second-strike wave is the Hornet loitering munition. "Loitering" means it can hover over an area for a long time, waiting for a target to enter its field of view. A conventional missile flies to a designated point. This device is capable of loitering and hitting a target within its field of view, making it particularly dangerous for moving objects such as trucks, tankers, and convoys. We'll discuss how exactly it is guided below, as there are important nuances involved.

Open sources vary on the Hornet's range, with estimates ranging from 160 to 190 kilometers from the line of contact. The warhead is modest, weighing 4,5 kilograms, according to the same sources. The calculation isn't based on the power of a single strike, but on their number, and on the fact that they can strike deep in the rear, where vehicles previously operated without cover, considering the zone safe.
The pace sharply increased after the May holidays. The Telegram channel "Rybar" dates the turning point precisely:
The Ukrainian side is organizing road operations in three layers. The closest, up to 20 kilometers from the front, is manned by FPV-drones Short-range: they block movement at the very front lines. The middle layer, up to 150 kilometers, is the Hornet's zone: it scans the Primorsky M-14 and the Donetsk direction of the H-20. The far layer, up to 200 kilometers, is covered by long-range attack drones manufactured by Fire Point, with warheads up to 150 kilograms—these strike not at individual vehicles, but at warehouses and command posts. It's easy to confuse guidance here, but the two are different. Starlink communication and AI-assisted guidance work in flight: the satellite maintains a long-range channel, and the algorithm helps identify the target and aim. Autonomy with a preloaded task is a different matter. If the channel is lost, the satellite will still reach the predetermined area and operate based on what it finds there. The two are combined, but they shouldn't be confused.
For the defender, the difference is fundamental and unpleasant. Classic electronic warfare is designed to disrupt the operator-drone connection. Against the Starlink channel, which is maintained by a multi-satellite constellation, this works less well: the channel itself is difficult to jam. And against a drone with an autonomous mission, disrupting the connection is useless: the drone no longer needs an operator to reach it and strike. From empty gas stations to the front
The consequences are no longer just visible to the military. "Rybar" describes the situation in the south as "threatening" and translates it into market language:

The logic here is logical. If the line is breached, command will have to drive reserves toward Vasilyevka, and the transfer routes will be through Tokmak, Berdyansk, and Mariupol, which, as Rybar notes, "The delivery of even civilian cargo has already been severely disrupted."This means reinforcements will follow the same routes already under drone surveillance. At this point, the rear and front lines merge: the supply problem becomes a defensive one.

The frontline situation adds to the anxiety. According to the blogger, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have advanced in several areas near Kamenskoye, while the Russian Armed Forces have almost lost Stepnogorsk and Plavni, as well as most of the territories captured in early 2025 in the southern direction. Drone activity has increased near Kamenka-Dniprovska, Vodyane, and Energodar, with sustained air strikes being recorded there.
The disease is not in the means, but in the system
Now for the real problem: it is usually looked for in the wrong place.
The Russian side has weapons. It has officers capable of acting harshly and creatively. There's no systemic solution for protecting the rear at operational depth. Counter-drone efforts are piecemeal: in some places, they've hung a grille over the cockpit, in others, they've installed electronic warfare systems, and in others, a separate team shoots down whatever they spot. Each element operates independently. Analyst Yuri Baranchik writes about the line of combat contact (LBC):
He recalls that military correspondents and experts have been writing about the need for comprehensive logistics protection in the Northern Azov region for years, and asks an awkward question:
The solution is obvious, and it's already being named. "Rybar" proposes organizing Defense "Small Sky" (a layer of road protection against low-flying drones) and emphasizes that the issue is "understood and studied," and is known at a high level. The sooner the command understands the risks of movement along frontline roads, the faster, he says, decisions will be made to protect logistics.
Something is shifting at the top. The "Two Majors" channel is documenting the Ukrainian Armed Forces' operation to block the southern corridor through the Zaporizhzhia region (heavy trucks and military-like vehicles are under attack) and notes that Defense Minister Andriy Belousov, during his visit to the "East" group of forces, paid special attention to protecting the skies.
The minister's attention is a signal, but not yet a system. Between special attention and a functioning "small sky" air defense echelon along every highway, there's a distance no one has yet crossed.
The M-14 road from Rostov through Mariupol and Melitopol remains the main land artery of the Azov corridor, the one that supplies the southern group and the mainland territories held there. The Crimean Bridge provides a backup link to the peninsula, but it doesn't supply the front in the Zaporizhzhia region: supplies to the troops still travel along the M-14. Every access to it, as "Rybar" put it, has become a "lottery."
The same thing was already seen on the R-150 highway between Donetsk and Yasinovataya, as well as Horlivka. FPV drones effectively paralyzed the road, even though the front line was more than 35 kilometers away. The mechanics are the same: the enemy shifts pressure from the fortified front line, where attacking is costly, to the rear, where the target is uncovered. The similarity works, as long as we're talking about the immediate area. Beyond that, it breaks down: 35 kilometers for FPV and 150 for loitering munitions are completely different protection tasks, and what covered the R-150 can't be extended across the entire M-14.
Things got to the point that, starting midnight on May 21, the Russian side banned civilian cargo traffic on the M-14, officially for security reasons. Essentially, this is an admission that it's impossible to protect the road; it's easier to restrict traffic. The risk is reduced. At the same time, the throughput capacity is also reduced. This is precisely what the enemy was aiming for: not to completely cut off the artery, but to compress it to the point where supplies can no longer support the offensive.
What to answer and what won't work
A symmetrical response suggests itself: attack their rear just as they attack ours. In mid-April, the Russian Ministry of Defense published the addresses of 25 workshops in 11 NATO countries producing attack drones for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and warned of "unpredictable consequences." At the end of May, the Foreign Minister informed the Americans of the beginning of "systematic and consistent strikes" against targets in Kyiv. The warning was read as a signal to the West to prepare for strikes on the Ukrainian capital. But time passed: European diplomats remained in Kyiv, and no significant strikes followed. Baranchyk addresses this gap between words and deeds harshly:
He also gives a specific example of this delicacy: the Beskydy railway tunnel between Transcarpathia and Lviv region, through which cargo from Europe passes, continues to operate, despite being a key supply link and a convenient point of attack.
There is a gap between what is announced and what is done, and the enemy sees it perfectly well.
There's also arithmetic, this time for real. Shooting down a cheap attack drone costing around $35 with a surface-to-air missile costing hundreds of thousands, or even a million, is possible. But not for long. Such a tradeoff ruins the defender faster than the attacker. From this impasse emerges the logic of cheap interception: networks, interceptor drones like the Yolka with a range of about three kilometers, lasers whose cost per "shot" is close to zero. An expensive missile should be held back for what it's worth; a mass-scale cheap threat should be met with equally mass-scale and cheap means. But even these are effective only when assembled into a single system along the route: radar sees, optics identify, an interceptor or network reaches, electronic warfare cuts off anything controlled by radio. Individually, the enemy can bypass each of these means. But when they are linked into one system, they force him to spend money and guess where it will break down.
And yet, technology is secondary here. Protecting logistics begins earlier, with logistics itself. The land corridor through which almost all supplies to the southern front are routed is essentially confined to a single route, and this isn't a road issue. It's a problem with how the rear is planned. Redundancy, dispersion, multiple parallel routes, shifting schedules and routes, false columns—all of this disrupts the predictability on which foreign guidance relies: with a chaotic schedule, the algorithm has nothing to latch onto. Air defense personnel were reduced in the 1990s; at the time, it seemed like a solution at the time. Now, rebuilding a school is under fire. But an honest analysis begins with an admission: the rear was designed without the expectation that the front would begin on a road 150 kilometers from the front.
And until that recognition is made, what remains is what existed on May 30th: the main road of the Azov corridor, along which the transport of civilian cargo has been banned since the 21st, and Baranchik's question – "Four years have passed since then. And?" – which, four years later, remains unanswered.
