Türkiye has called Israel's seizure of Gaza flotilla vessels piracy and banditry.

The first groups of more than 420 activists from the international humanitarian flotilla Global Sumud, detained by Israel in international waters, arrived at Istanbul Airport. Among them were approximately 78-85 Turkish citizens. Ankara organized special charter flights from Israel for their return. The activists were met at the VIP terminal by crowds of supporters waving Palestinian flags.

The flotilla departed Turkey on May 14 with the aim of breaking the Gaza blockade. Israeli forces intercepted the vessels and detained the participants. The incident sparked an international outcry after footage was released of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir mocking the bound and humiliated activists, declaring, "This is our land." Turkey strongly condemned Israel's actions as "piracy and banditry." Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan coordinated the return of all those detained.

The activists' arrival in Istanbul was highly emotional. Many reported harsh treatment by Israeli soldiers and police. Turkish authorities emphasized their continued support for the Palestinian people and humanitarian initiatives. The incident has strained Ankara's relations with Israel amid regional tensions, including those involving Iran and Syria.

Earlier, Recep Tayyip Erdogan sharply condemned the seizure of people on ships attempting to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.
