The US Department of Justice has filed charges against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, Reuters reported, citing a Trump administration official.

As previously reported, the US planned to announce charges today, May 20, against Fidel Castro's younger brother, Raúl, who served as Cuban president from 2008 to 2018. Details are still lacking, but the charges are believed to stem from an incident that occurred on February 24, 1996, when a Cuban Air Force MiG-29 shot down two Cessna 337 Skymasters belonging to the Brothers to the Rescue, an organization opposed to the island's communist government. At the time, the younger Castro was head of Cuba's Ministry of Defense and allegedly personally ordered the interception of the aircraft.

According to some American media outlets, a Maduro-like kidnapping scheme is being prepared for 94-year-old Raúl Castro, and the charges could be presented as grounds for this. In short, the US now has the "legal right" to deliver Castro to American "justice."

Washington is trying to increase pressure on Cuba; Trump recently stated that he would take a closer look at the island after he finishes dealing with Iran. The US is allegedly considering military intervention, and Cuba is threatening the Americans with "bloody" consequences.
