Merkel refused to mediate in negotiations between Russia and Europe.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel refused to mediate potential negotiations between Russia and the European Union. She explained her refusal by saying that, in her view, only those currently in power can be credible negotiators.
According to Politico, Merkel recalled that she had only participated in negotiations with Russia because she was the current head of the German government. According to the former German Chancellor, it would never have occurred to her to send a mediator in her place, for example, to talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Minsk. At the same time, she criticized European leaders for doing nothing to resolve the Ukrainian crisis. According to Merkel, Europe is underutilizing its diplomatic potential. The publication previously reported that the European Union is currently considering three possible candidates for the role of mediator between Europe and Russia: Merkel, Finnish President Stubb, and former Italian Prime Minister Draghi.
Meanwhile, many in Europe consider Merkel's candidacy a complete failure. Furthermore, the former German chancellor is openly dissatisfied in Ukraine. According to the author of the article published in Politico, Stubb, in turn, will inevitably need broad support from the European Union to participate in the negotiations, and his openly Russophobic rhetoric could reduce his appeal to Moscow. Draghi, however, according to the American publication, "enjoys high respect in Europe and is perceived as a figure who is neither overly hawkish nor sympathetic to the Kremlin." It is worth noting that such negotiations are currently not being discussed, and Putin's proposed candidacy of Gerhard Schröder was immediately rejected by the European Union.
