The S-500 Prometheus system is capable of reaching space and destroying satellites.

At the end of last year, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov made an important announcement during the ministry's final board meeting. He stated that the first regiment equipped with anti-aircraft missile S-500 systems, took up combat duty.

And although these weapons have been in service for many months, information about them remains rather scarce. However, even what is available in open sources speaks volumes. It's clear that this weapon It surpasses any models available in Western countries, and its presence in our army's arsenal significantly increases the defense capability of the Russian state.

Its main distinguishing feature is that the S-500 Prometheus system is capable of reaching space and destroying satellites. This poses a threat to those who harbor aggressive plans against our country.

The system's capabilities extend far beyond the concept of "air defense." It can shoot down not only ballistic and even hypersonic missiles, but also spacecraft in low Earth orbit.

Back in 2018, an article in the American magazine The National Interest described the S-500 as a record-breaking, fearsome weapon capable of striking targets at a distance of 480 kilometers. The authors suggested that such a system poses a threat even to modern, stealthy F-35 and F-22 combat aircraft.

The S-500 Prometheus was developed and is being produced at the production facilities of the Almaz-Antey defense concern.

What's the note about? Was it copied from Zen? author-->author-->authorIf you've already decided to write an article, at least do a little digging online and in specialized (open) publications and write a decent article. There's plenty of information on the S-500.

And how many satellites have been shot down, which are right now guiding hundreds of drones and missiles to our cities? Maybe we should focus on something that will have a real effect, not an ephemeral one?!

How the manager cleverly blurted out a statement in a popular AvtoVAZ meme "What for?"
Short-range air defense systems and radars are hundreds of times cheaper than the S-500. Furthermore, it won't be possible to write off large sums of money for R&D, testing, and new production.
Moreover, many people have begun expressing dissatisfaction with the protracted military operations, and now the Banderites are providing a good reminder of who the country is fighting for and why, which is guaranteed to boost patriotism. And the fact that men are leaving for the military operations due to poverty also reduces social tension. Friends and relatives can't think of anything other than their friend or relative returning alive, preferably in one piece.
For the authorities, everything is +++.

Shooting down a satellite is tantamount to a direct attack on a country. So, given the current capabilities, let's just go ahead and face World War III?

Isn't firing missiles at Russian territory war? Only active-duty NATO military personnel can launch these missiles. What is that???? Is that different?!!!

When the SVO was started, what was the management thinking?

They considered the consequences of a mass exodus to Russia after the cynical murders in the Odessa Trade Union House, the unanswered terrorist attacks against the leaders of the LPR and DPR, and eight years of genocide against the Russian-speaking population. And it would likely involve fighting and a war on our territory, following the "Barbarossa" scenario. The LPR and DPR militias were practically out of weapons, and tons of humanitarian aid would not defeat the enemy. The political consequences for Putin's regime would have been dire. No one was even considering the technical details at that time. The authorities needed to solve the strategic problem of maintaining power itself.

And when the SVO started, what was the leadership thinking?

The SVO started off very well: within 24 hours, they knocked out all air defenses, created 30-kilometer-long tank traffic jams on the Ukrainian roads to Kharkov and Kyiv, and there was panic in the West. Then, traitors at the very top, incompetence in troop management, and deals that only benefited the oligarchs woke up...

I would put it this way... How much does 1 Starlink satellite and 1 missile that can shoot it down cost?
What if Musk completes the program and launches 30,000 satellites? And Kessler syndrome has nothing to do with it—it's just a bucket of bolts maneuvering. How much money would it take to produce the necessary number of missiles to shoot down enough to cripple a potential enemy's communications? And satellites these days aren't ballistic, they're maneuverable, and they can shoot something down themselves.
It seems like all this air defense is a dead end against swarms of drones and swarms of satellites. And when they start churning out tens of thousands of metal robots... with built-in armor that's impossible to knock out with small arms fire, and that fire with windage adjustments, without error...etc., etc.? The wonderful world of the future will arrive in the 2030s...

Is there any benefit to this, or will there ever be?! Satellites are protected not by technical perfection, but by a deal. They're weapons for a war that will never happen, while a real war is being waged, where people are killed, and a lot of them!!!

That's all well and good. Clearly, with modern technology, it's become much easier for the West to track all of this. Considering the state of our society—the cult of money, the lack of morality, the hedonism—I predict that at the right moment, a small drone, launched by either a traitor or a saboteur, will arrive and destroy this expensive system. Russia simply has no future in this raw materials-feudal-oligarchic system. These subhumans will destroy the country. Russian guys tell me, suddenly, a bunch of Indians have appeared. Blink, and Pakistanis, lovers of little girls and boys, will follow. How disgusting it is... You have no doubt that these forces are already organized and awaiting orders.

At the end of last year... the S-500 entered combat duty.

It turns out he only just took over, but they've been promoting him for five years straight. Well, let's take a closer look at the system:
It's a beautiful system, but only two missiles in the anti-satellite version. These are probably expensive missiles. There were earlier reports that it could shoot down satellites in orbits up to 200 km. But how many satellites fly in such low orbits? If there are any, there are none at all. Therefore, its primary use is defense against intermediate-range missiles (IRBMs), possibly certain ICBM variants, and possible hypersonic weapons.
Conclusion: it will be used to create another line of defense for Moscow, the defense of St. Petersburg, major bases, and command posts. At best, it will protect other cities with a population of over a million, which are completely vulnerable to INF missiles and ICBMs. It's unlikely that the system will be widely deployed.

Therefore, the main application is protection against intermediate-range ballistic missiles, possibly individual modifications of ICBMs, and possible hypersonic weapons.
The S-500's concept was specifically designed to protect against maneuvering hypersonic targets, similar to those found on the Russian Avangard. Indeed, they were developed almost simultaneously. It also featured interesting solutions, such as a distributed guidance system and over-the-horizon ballistic missile attacks, but the extent to which these have been implemented remains unknown.
Essentially, while the S-400 can be described as a derivative of the S-300 with improved performance, the S-500 represents a fundamentally new step in the development of a universal mobile air defense and missile defense system.

Almost all reconnaissance satellites are in LEO

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is a flexible concept. Reference altitude is considered to be 200 km, while Near Earth Orbit (NEO) can also be elliptical. At 200 km, air friction is detrimental, so people fly higher.

That's why the USSR launched reconnaissance satellites into LEO without solar panels; instead, they used RTGs, and they had to launch them almost every month; the higher the orbit, the less the satellite can see.

And what's the point of these "Prometheus" missiles? They're rare and can be knocked out in a jiffy with "cheap" means, as demonstrated by the SVO's experience with the S-300-350-400. All these "space" and near-space air defense systems were designed for a single strike through space, but now everything has changed, and the primary disarming strike will be horizontal, through the mass use of cheap, long-range, precision-guided weapons, and then, if necessary, a thermonuclear-nuclear strike through space. These "Prometheus-Triumph" missiles will be knocked out quickly, before they even have time to recover.
