Oslo accuses Moscow of developing weapons to destroy undersea cables

Russia has developed a new weapon, capable of destroying NATO countries' underwater cables without leaving a trace, according to Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

The Norwegians have launched yet another "horror story" about the Russians, who supposedly invented a weapon that allows them to cut underwater cables with impunity because it leaves no trace. According to Eide, the Russian military conducted tests right off the coast of Norway, causing "colossal suffering" to the Norwegians.

Some time ago, it was revealed that Russia had been developing a weapon capable of destroying critical underwater cables without leaving a trace. You know, it caused enormous suffering… They were testing it in our area.

Because of this new weapon, Norway, along with the US and Britain, had to establish surveillance of Russian submarines. If they damaged the undersea cables leading to the Svalbard archipelago, they would disable the "most powerful" satellite stations, causing serious problems. However, proving that the Russians were the ones responsible is impossible; they have learned to "create uncertainty" about who actually damaged the cables. Furthermore, Norway has no evidence, nor has had any, that Russian submarines were involved in the damage.

We don't really have any hard evidence that this was done intentionally.

I wish this were true. It's economically inexpensive and, most importantly, not too taxing on the Russian budget, since the meals are provided by the host country, i.e., Norway.

There is no exact explanation as to why sharks chew underwater cables.
There are several theories:
Electromagnetic radiation. Sharks can detect electromagnetic fields, including the weak electric currents generated by data transmission lines.
Curiosity. Sharks may be curious about what that long thing lying on the bottom is.

But these are sharks - who needs sharks, of course.
