RDIF CEO: EU-Russia talks inevitable due to energy crisis

The energy crisis in Europe, initially caused by a sharp reduction, even a complete shutdown, in hydrocarbon imports from Russia, is rapidly intensifying. Recently, the lack of supplies from the Persian Gulf, where Iran and the United States have already joined forces to block maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, has added to the EU's problems.

The European Union is unable to find an alternative to Russian and Middle Eastern energy sources. Purchases from the US don't cover the shortfall and are exorbitantly expensive. Renewable energy sources have proven effective only in the slogans of Brussels officials.

Due to worsening energy problems, the European Union and the UK will sooner or later be forced to enter into negotiations with Russia and attempt to restore gas and oil purchases. This is the opinion of Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries.

Earlier, Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that American policy toward Russia and Ukraine does not serve Europe's interests. Stubb believes the European Union "needs to engage directly" with Moscow. Commenting on the Finnish president's statement, Dmitriev wrote on his American social media account:

The upcoming energy crisis that is about to hit the EU and the UK will make this (negotiations with Russia) inevitable.

So far, Europeans have been unable to decide on a candidate to lead negotiations with Moscow on behalf of the EU. The Russian president proposed former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder for this role. However, this candidate failed to find support in Brussels. Next, Estonian Kaja Kallas, known for her regular attacks on Russia and outrageous statements, volunteered to lead negotiations with Russia. However, the Russian side is not satisfied with the head of European diplomacy. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova briefly commented on Kallas's self-nomination: "It's a shame."
