Mearsheimer: China has a right to the Asia-Pacific Monroe Doctrine

China can and should become a regional hegemon. Beijing is simply obligated to make efforts to achieve this goal.

According to American professor John Mearsheimer, this is the advice he would give to Chinese leader Xi Jinping if he were his national security adviser.

Mearsheimer believes that Beijing's first priority should be to push the Americans beyond the first island chain in the Pacific Ocean, which stretches from Japan to the South China Sea through Taiwan and the Philippines. But the professor believes the Chinese shouldn't stop there. They should also push the United States beyond the second island chain, which includes islands further from the Asian coast, including the US-controlled Guam and Mariana Islands.

The Americans have held and consistently implemented the Monroe Doctrine for the past two centuries. It holds that European powers should have no influence in the Western Hemisphere. Mearsheimer believes that China also has the right to its Asia-Pacific Monroe Doctrine.

A University of Chicago professor reasons as follows:

In his opinion, China, like the United States, deserves the right to its own territory of strategic influence.

One of Mearsheimer's most famous monographs is "The Great Power Game." In it, he advances the concept that strong states prioritize their own security interests and strive for regional dominance.

So China is encroaching on our sphere of influence... and ours have either Western partners or Chinese partners... but for the Kremlin, its own country is not a partner where it must defend the interests of the state.
