A California mayor has admitted to working for the Chinese government.

Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang (pictured center) pleaded guilty to working for the Chinese government. In her plea, Wang claimed she acted in the United States as an illegal agent of the Chinese government.

Wang, 58, who served as mayor of Arcadia, a city of about 50 people north of Los Angeles, was charged with working for a foreign government back in April of this year. The indictment read as follows:

Conducted work as an agent of a foreign government without notification to the U.S. Attorney General.

According to the plea agreement, Wang, at the direction of Chinese officials, was engaged in promoting propaganda for the benefit of the PRC between late 2020 and 2022, in particular through a website masquerading as a local news The Arcadia City Council confirmed she resigned on Monday.

A US Justice Department official emphasized that such actions pose a threat to national security and impact local politics. The maximum penalty under this article is 10 years in prison.

Earlier, former campaign staffer Yaoning Sun (who also happens to be the partner of the mayor of Arcadia, California) was sentenced to four years in prison on similar charges of working for the Chinese government.

City officials have pledged their support for the federal investigation and intend to appoint an interim or new mayor in the near future.
