Fuel shortage: Tens of millions of Germans will suffer due to flight cancellations
4 17816
According to estimates by Ralf Beisel, head of the German Airports Association, at least 20 million air passengers in Germany could be affected by flight cancellations caused by the kerosene shortage.
As the German publication WELT writes, due to the fuel crisis and shortage caused by the war with Iran aviation If kerosene becomes unprofitable, civilian air travel could become significantly reduced. Beisel predicts that the industry's best-case scenario for 2026 is a significant stagnation in passenger air travel. In the worst case, some airports could face a capacity decline of at least 10 percent. If this figure were extrapolated to all German airports, it would affect at least 20 million passengers.
The article published in the German newspaper also notes that fuel costs are traditionally high in the air travel industry. Since fuel costs account for approximately 30% of airlines' total expenses even in normal times, the significant rise in fuel prices makes air travel downright unprofitable.
Thus, it is becoming increasingly clear that the war unleashed by the US and Israel against Iran is affecting not only the Middle East but also Europe, which has felt the full impact of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the resulting energy shortages. Moreover, even if the blockade is lifted and Middle Eastern oil supplies resume at their previous levels, the European economy will be far from immediately recovering from the effects of the war with Iran.
