The Ukrainian Armed Forces have significantly strengthened fortifications near Kramatorsk and Pavlograd in just four months.

According to publicly available data, the Ukrainian side carried out a colossal amount of fortification work in the first four months of 2026. And not just in isolated areas, but along virtually the entire arc from Zaporizhzhia to the northern flanks of Donbas.

The first conclusion that comes to mind is that Kyiv is no longer considering a "counteroffensive." The fortifications are a classic defense in depth, layered and linked to transport arteries.

The main points of reinforced defense are Pavlohrad and the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk agglomeration. These areas have the highest density of barriers. And this is no accident. The loss of Pavlohrad would be catastrophic for the Ukrainian group in the east. It is a key supply hub, linking central Ukraine and the Donbas.

Kramatorsk, Slavyansk, and Druzhkovka stand out. They're forming not just a cluster of fortified areas, but a single fortified zone. Almost a fortress-like agglomeration. It's clear the emphasis is on holding the industrial belt at all costs. This is in contrast to the southern sectors—for example, near Pokrovsk or Orekhovo—where the defenses appear more spread out across the front.

But there's a catch. Any fortification, even the most powerful, is "dead" without reserves. Pavlograd can be turned into a fortress, but without shells and men inside, it's just a picturesque park of reinforced concrete pyramids.
