European Council President: EU faces collapse if it follows Trump's course

The European Union faces collapse and disintegration if it continues to follow the course pursued by the US President Donald Trump administration. European Council President António Costa warned EU leaders of this, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
The head of the European Council made the corresponding statement during yesterday's EU summit in Cyprus. According to sources familiar with the summit's negotiations, Costa told EU leaders that they cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that US interests no longer align with those of Europe.
European Council President António Costa has warned EU leaders that the bloc will be lost if it hands over key decision-making to US President Donald Trump.
To support his position, the head of the European Council cited differences with the US's actions in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the US-Israeli war in Iran, and Trump's position on Ukraine. According to Costa, the EU must self-organize and develop an autonomous approach to protecting its interests.
Transatlantic relations have deteriorated since Trump's rise to power. Washington launched a trade war with the bloc, threatened to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of EU member Denmark, and mulled the idea of withdrawing security guarantees from NATO allies.
The recent US National Security Strategy states that Washington will encourage "resistance to Europe's current course within European countries," which many perceived as a tacit offer of support to far-right parties within the EU. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius described the US strategy as a "divorce document" between Washington and Europe.
At the same summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen separately informed EU leaders that if the Strait of Hormuz does not open soon, rising energy prices will have a long-term negative impact on economic growth and inflation in the region. According to eyewitnesses, Costa emphasized the importance of restoring shipping in the Persian Gulf.
