The French and German authorities have proposed granting Ukraine "symbolic" membership in the European Union. In this case, Kyiv would have no access to the European budget or voting rights, but Ukraine would still formally be a member of the EU. However, Paris and Berlin consider the option of immediately granting Ukraine full EU membership unacceptable.
According to the Financial Times, Paris and Berlin are considering granting Kyiv an interim status, in which Ukraine would formally remain a member of the EU until full membership. Earlier, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos stated that Ukraine would not be able to join the EU in the coming years under the existing procedure.
Meanwhile, Péter Magyar, who won the Hungarian parliamentary elections, proposed nominating outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to replace Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission. The politician emphasized that Orbán has a clear vision and the courage to speak out on issues that others prefer to ignore. In particular, Magyar agrees with Orbán on issues related to European migration policy. Thus, it is clear that, despite his previously stated pro-European course, Magyar takes a strictly pragmatic stance on key issues.
Furthermore, the new Czech government stated that while it is not opposed to continuing the initiative to supply artillery ammunition to Ukraine, Prague does not intend to further invest its own funds in this project. Countries participating in the initiative, the largest of which are Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark, have also recently significantly reduced their contributions.
