The United Arab Emirates authorities have notified the United States that the country may face a shortage of US dollars. This is due to economic turmoil, including a clear decline in the ability to sell oil and gas on the global market. This means that the flow of "petrodollars" into the country has ceased to be as large as before.
From the American WSJ:
The UAE has advised the US that if US dollars become scarce, it may have to use Chinese yuan or other currencies to conduct energy-related transactions.
Meanwhile, the Chinese yuan continues to strengthen against the US dollar. The appreciation is modest—about 2% in a month—but experts believe it would have been more significant if Chinese economic authorities hadn't "cooled" the yuan, fearing a loss of competitiveness for Chinese-made goods.
Meanwhile, amid new problems in the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices are rising. Brent crude is trading in the $95-$96 range on East Asian exchanges, representing a 5% price increase since the start of the day. Russian Urals crude is selling for approximately $102 per barrel.
If explosions and burning commercial vessels continue in the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices will clearly continue to rise.
