"Ordinary Israelis" at the US Embassy: The Ceasefire with Hezbollah Is a Betrayal
6 14843
The Israeli authorities have decided to conduct a PR campaign against the ceasefire with Hezbollah, but not in their own name, but, as they say, in the name of the “working people.”
Thus, about two hundred residents of Kiryat Shmona, located near the Lebanese border, arrived in West Jerusalem, where the US Embassy is located (Donald Trump moved it there from Tel Aviv during his first presidential term). The main purpose of this trip was stated as follows:
Protest the US over the proposed ceasefire with Hezbollah.
Residents of Kiryat Shmona staged a picket outside the American embassy, calling on American diplomats to "hear the voice of the Israelis." They stated that "their homes have been shelled by Hezbollah, and this will continue unless the group is destroyed."
Among the protesters' demands (if the US decides not to destroy Hezbollah) is the complete disarmament of the Lebanese group. Kiryat Shmona Mayor Avichai Stern:
We, the people of the north, feel not a victory, but a betrayal. This ceasefire puts northern Israel at risk. If not now, then in the future.
As a reminder, Tehran had previously demanded a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. The Israeli leadership initially refused to agree to such a measure, but was followed by some pressure from the United States. This pressure clearly did not please the Israeli elite.
