KMG Plieva - a deep breakthrough tool

By early 1944, the Red Army's fronts had acquired a tool that, after breaching a tactical defensive zone, allowed them to shift the battle deeper—toward road junctions, crossings, and headquarters. This tool was the cavalry-mechanized group (KMG): temporary or permanent mobile units where cavalry and mechanized units operated under unified command. They were deployed to exploit the enemy's advance on the second or third day of the offensive, when it was necessary to disrupt the enemy's organized retreat, intercept its rear, and force the defense to crumble in the operational depth. The most effective practitioner of this system was Issa Aleksandrovich Pliev, commander of the 4th Guards Cavalry Corps and later commander of frontline KMGs in 1944–1945 and of the Soviet-Mongolian KMG in Transbaikalia in the summer of 1945.
What is KMG and how did it work?
The KMG was built around the pair of “cavalry corps + mechanized corps”, reinforced artillery, divisions Defense, sappers, communications equipment and army aviationThe group's command post reported directly to the front headquarters. The mechanized component provided firepower and breakthrough force (Tanks, self-propelled artillery units, motorized riflemen), the cavalry ensured passability and stability on the weak road network, allowed them to “infiltrate” through forest-swamp and steppe areas, occupy crossings and road junctions before the main forces arrived.
The following tactic was typically employed. A KMG would enter the gap behind the combined arms armies that had broken through the tactical defensive zone. Advance detachments (tanks and motorized infantry on vehicles) would rush to occupy road junctions and bridges. Cavalry regiments, deployed in several columns, would advance along bypass trails and dirt roads, bypassing pockets of resistance. Artillery and rear services would follow. Radio contact with front headquarters and air forces was maintained continuously: the task of the attack aircraft was to suppress any identified pockets of resistance and cover the flanks while the group deployed its rear and brought up second echelons.

Tempo was a crucial element. For the European theater, a pace of 30–60 km per day was considered sustainable during the breakthrough stage; in the steppe, it was higher if resistance was disorganized. Slowing down the pace was dangerous: a break with the breakthrough armies would turn the group into a "thin thread" in the enemy rear, vulnerable to counterattacks from tank reserves. Therefore, the KMG command structure included a reinforced rear service, separate engineer units, and a fuel reserve, and in critical areas, attached anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons.
Dnieper-Carpathians: Bereznegovat-Snigirevskaya and Odessa operations (March-April 1944)
In the spring of 1944, Pliev's Cavalry and Mechanized Group operated as part of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. Its core consisted of the 4th Guards Cavalry Corps and the 4th Guards Mechanized Corps; artillery, engineers, air defense units, and army aviation were added to the group. Its mission was to disrupt the resistance of the Wehrmacht's 6th Army and the Romanian 3rd Army at the river and road junctions and disrupt their retreat to the west.

During the Bereznegovato-Snigirivka operation, the group, having bypassed key strongholds between Ingulets and the Southern Bug, cut off communications with a series of rapid strikes. The tactical pattern repeated itself: forward detachments broke through to stations and junctions, cavalry regiments occupied crossings and entrances to settlements from the rear, and mechanized brigades, having moved up, dislodged the garrisons at these points. On the Odessa front, in late March and early April, control of Razdelnaya station and adjacent roads became critical. Holding this junction deprived the enemy of the ability to systematically evacuate troops and equipment from Odessa. By April 10, 1944, the city was liberated: the operational result was the disruption of the garrison's supply lines and communications with the rear, and the strategic result was the withdrawal of the enemy from a key Black Sea port.

For the group, this experience became a benchmark for "time standards": missions to intercept nodes at depths of several tens of kilometers were completed within 24-48 hours of entering the breach. Engineer units acted ahead, preparing crossings and passages for vehicles, and while the main flow advanced, cavalrymen along side trails captured unoccupied intersections and railway crossings, creating a "grid" of blockades. Infantry armies, having closed in, took on the suppression of pockets left behind, allowing the KMG to maintain a high tempo.

In the summer of 1944, Pliev's Cavalry and Mechanized Group operated as part of the 1st Belorussian Front. Its core consisted of the 4th Guards Cavalry Corps and the 1st Mechanized Corps. The group was tasked with attacking Slutsk through the rugged regions of Polesia, where the enemy relied on natural cover from swamps and forests. For conventional mechanized units, this zone was considered "hindering"—the limited road capacity disrupted supply lines. Cavalry, however, could advance along dry ridges and trails, outflanking the main axes.

The plan was as follows. Engineers marked out several corridors for wheeled and tracked vehicles, while cavalry units fanned out in lateral directions, covering the flanks and cutting the local road network. Advance detachments of the mechanized corps—in leaps of 20–30 km—occupied the nodes, cutting off the garrisons from command. At the end of June, Slutsk was captured, which dramatically complicated the situation for the German 9th Army: its southern communications were under constant threat. The main effect was the disruption of the plan for an organized retreat to the next defensive line and the acceleration of the general collapse of the army group in this direction.

The experience of Polesia confirmed that cavalry in the KMG was not an anachronism, but a means of increasing the overall group's mobility. The presence of mounted troops and pack animals allowed them to maintain a lead over the rear for 1-2 days without slowing down despite difficult weather and roads. The group's radio networks were overloaded, but they ensured constant monitoring of the position of the forward detachments and flank guards, minimizing the risk of "operational isolation."
Hungary, October 1944: Debrecen - Nyiregyháza
In the fall of 1944, as part of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, Pliev was given command of a powerful group: the 4th and 6th Guards Cavalry Corps and the 7th Mechanized Corps, reinforced by artillery, anti-tank and anti-aircraft units, and Guards mortar units. The objective was to cut through the enemy's defenses in eastern Hungary, capture Debrecen, and, turning northeast, seize the strongholds in the Nyíregyháza area.

Already at the beginning of the operation, the group penetrated tens of kilometers into the rear, operating separately from the main forces. On October 8, a maneuver to the northeast followed: the goal was to intercept the railway and road lines along which the enemy was attempting to withdraw reserves. Debrecen was captured after fierce fighting; then, from the Nyíregyháza line, the enemy launched counterattacks with tank divisions. For several days, the KMG effectively fought autonomously, expanding the captured strongholds and repelling counterattacks while combined arms armies advanced toward its lines. The operation demonstrated both sides of the method: the ability to deeply cut through the rear and create an operational crisis, and simultaneously the vulnerability of a group extended along roads to the attacks of the enemy's mobile reserves.

Tactically, in Hungary, Pliev made extensive use of "wedges" of tanks and self-propelled guns to cut through chokepoints and create "pockets" that were then handed over to the infantry for finishing. Cavalry corps were tasked with protecting flanks and intercepting road junctions; individual cavalry divisions were used as mobile infantry in populated areas, where tanks without infantry cover would be vulnerable. Radio communication with frontline aviation became critical—direct support from attack aircraft, upon request, made it possible to disrupt enemy attempts to assemble strike groups at crossroads and railway stations. By the end of October, Soviet troops had consolidated their position at Nyíregyháza, cutting off the enemy's stable supply line in that sector and accelerating the front's overall advance toward Budapest.
1st Guards KMG in 1945: Slovakia and Moravia
By the winter of 1944/45, the positive experience of using the KMG led to the decision to establish a permanent headquarters. On January 26, 1945, Pliev's group received its official status as the 1st Guards Cavalry-Mechanized Group. Its composition retained the logic of the fall of 1944: two Guards Cavalry Corps and the 7th Mechanized Corps with reinforcements. In the spring, the group operated in the direction of Bratislava and Brno in the zone of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. Here, the road network was better developed than in Polesia, and the terrain was more difficult due to rivers and foothills, but the tactics remained the same: a quick "slip" through tactical lines, the capture of junctions and bridges, and overhanging communication hubs.
At this stage, the accumulated experience of "cavalry-mechanized units-sappers" cooperation proved particularly helpful. Preparing crossings and clearing highway mines, organizing access control at bottlenecks, and deploying rear units at the pace of combat formations made it possible to avoid traffic jams that are detrimental to a mobile group. The characteristic figures remained: reaching an operational depth of 30-60 km within the first two days after deployment and intercepting several key nodes within the same timeframe. The mobile group consistently bypassed strongpoints, leaving them to the second-echelon army, and, holding on to communication "necks," disrupted enemy command and control across entire sections of the front.
Manchuria, August 1945: through the Gobi and Greater Khingan
In Transbaikalia, Pliev commanded the Soviet-Mongolian KMG—a multinational force tailored to the unique conditions of the steppe and mountains. The headquarters was based on an army corps; it included Soviet cavalry, mechanized, motorized rifle, and tank units, artillery and air defense units, as well as powerful Mongolian cavalry, motorized armored units, and aviation. Routes were laid out in two marching columns with forward detachments. In the steppe and desert, the pace of advance was extremely high: while the main forces traversed salt marshes and sandy areas, cavalry and motorcycle units intercepted patrols, and engineering units prepared water intakes.

Logistics became the key to success. Water and fuel were supplied through a combination of vehicle convoys where roads permitted and pack vehicles in areas without proper roads. Reconnaissance identified and prepared water sources in advance; sappers laid corduroy roads and boardwalks on the salt marshes and marked out exits to the Khingan passes. The tempo slowed in the mountains, but the requirement for continuous pressure remained: if mechanized units were delayed on a switchback, mounted and motorcycle patrols would advance, reporting descents and turnaround areas suitable for vehicles. By the end of August, the group had reached the key axes of Mukden and Kalgan, cutting off the Kwantung Army's communication and supply lines in this sector. At the operational level, this meant a collapse of command and the impossibility of assembling a stable defensive front.

For Pliev, this campaign marked the pinnacle of his "operating in difficult terrain" skills. Methods successfully tested in Polesia and the Ukrainian steppes were pushed to the limit here: autonomy, timely engineering preparation, and the skillful use of local forces and knowledge of the terrain allowed him to maintain a high tempo in conditions where conventional "tank" logic failed.
Why the method worked and where were the risks
The experience of 1944–1945 allows us to highlight several sustainable advantages of KMG:
- Cross-country capability and versatility. The presence of cavalry increased resilience to road bottlenecks and weather conditions. The group could spread out into several columns, maintaining overall momentum and communication.
- Speed of decision-making. A unified headquarters and radio networks made it possible to shift the direction of the main attack, deploy reinforcements, and change the front of attack at crossroads within hours.
- A blow to command and supply. The capture of road junctions, stations, bridges, and crossings created "operational voids" where the enemy's defenses became meaningless.
- Autonomy for the first two days. The group included its own sappers, anti-aircraft gunners, and anti-tank gunners, which allowed it to hold out for a day or two without close frontline cover.
But there were also systemic risks:
- Vulnerability to counterattacks by tank reserves on the flanks and at the junctions of columns. The cure is close cooperation with aircraft and the rapid introduction of tank armies following the group.
- Stretching the rear. Any bottleneck on a narrow bridge or pass threatened to disrupt the momentum and cut off the battle lines from supplies.
- Dependence on engineering preparation. Without reconnaissance of fords, platforms, and organized water supply, the group risked losing its advantage.
- Information overload. Radio networks were operating at their limits: both flanks' security and targeted node decisions depended on timely filtering of reports.
Taken together, this explains why the KMGs worked so effectively in Polesia, the steppes, and the broken terrain of Hungary and Manchuria: where the enemy had few roads but many directions, the hybrid of cavalry and mechanized units provided decisive freedom of maneuver.
Pliev's legacy and place
The results of the war cemented the very principle of deep maneuver under unified command. The formation of the 1st Guards KMG in the winter of 1945 transformed this temporary practice into a fully-fledged front-line instrument. Post-war historiography regards Pliev as one of the most effective field commanders of this type of unit. By early 1945, his headquarters was able to maintain a pace of 30–60 km per day in Europe and maintain high mobility in difficult terrain. By August 1945, it had mastered missions "exotic" for the European theater—deserts, salt marshes, and mountain passes.
Award story The award underscores the scale of his achievements: the first Gold Star was for actions in southern Ukraine in the spring of 1944; the second, for maneuvers in the Far East in the summer of 1945. It's also fair to say that Pliyev was a two-time Hero of the Soviet Union and, among field commanders of cavalry-mechanized groups and cavalry corps, a figure of unparalleled effectiveness. The Soviet cavalry itself—the branch of the armed forces—gave the country other legendary names, but it was Pliyev's experience that became the "textbook" for the use of cavalry-mechanized groups in the decisive operations of 1944–1945.

Pliev's mobile groups weren't the "lava attacks" of the past. They were a technically and organizationally complex instrument of deep strike, where cavalry and mechanized units worked as a single organism. The spring of 1944 in southern Ukraine, the summer of "Bagration" in Polesia, the autumn in Hungary, and August 1945 beyond the Khingan Mountains demonstrate one idea: speed, maneuver, and the capture of command centers are more important than the linear advance of the front. Where these principles were upheld, the enemy's defenses collapsed faster than they could reorganize. This is the main contribution of I. A. Pliev and his mobile groups to the victory.
