Sniper rifle CB-98 and its further modernization

36
Most recently, there was information that Izhmash updated one of its sniper rifles, namely the CB-98. Since our army has always felt the lack of “bolts”, and of a sufficiently high quality, I think you should write about this, although not very common, but existing weapons, which is also updated. Looking ahead, I would like to note separately that the rifle in the previous version and in the current one is positioned as high-precision, which is not without a fair share of truth. Of course, it cannot be compared with individual samples, but the price of a weapon is very well compared.

The sniper rifle CB-98 was created on the basis of the Record-CISM sporting rifle, but the weapon can be considered to be actually created from scratch, since labor was invested in it no less than when creating a completely new model. The weapon was developed under the leadership of Vladimir Stronsky, like a rifle, superior in its accuracy to the widespread SVD, which in general was not a difficult task, provided that the SVD was self-loading, and the SV-98 was a “bolt”. The weapon comes in two versions, chambered for 7,62x54R and .308 Win, according to the manufacturer, the accuracy of the rifle itself allows you to fire with accuracy of 0,5 MOA, but this is subject to the use of ideal ammunition, which always causes problems.

By itself, the rifle is a regular magazine "bolt". The appearance of the weapon is not the same as in most modern models, and recalls the sporting roots of a rifle, but this does not adversely affect the usability, but rather the opposite. Butt CB-98 has the ability to adjust along its length, as well as the height of the cheek support. The magazine is inserted into the receiver, cut out in the rifle's box, with only its small part coming out, thereby creating the feeling that the magazine is located at a sufficiently large angle relative to the barrel of the weapon. The weapon is equipped with folding, height-adjustable bipod, in addition to them, under the butt can be located another, third. To carry the weapon on the right side of it, a handle can be put upward, or an ordinary belt can be used.

Separately, it should be said about the rifle barrel. It is made by cold forging technology, the bore of the weapon is not chrome plated. Barrel free-hanging, does not touch the weapon anywhere except at the junction with the receiver. A flame arrester, a noiseless firing device can be mounted on the muzzle cut, or the sleeve can be screwed on. It is interesting that a lot of where it is said that supposedly this sleeve creates some resistance at the muzzle, which increases the accuracy of shooting. It seems to me that the accuracy of shooting increases due to the fact that the flame arrester does not have a negative effect on the bullet, and not because the muzzle is deformed or some kind of "stress" is created. This is confirmed by the fact that when using PBS, which, by the way, is available in the original set of weapons, the accuracy is higher than when using a flame arrester. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the flame arrester of the rifle is not the most successful design.

The mass of weapons without optical sight and ammunition is 5,5 kilogram. Shops are double row, with a capacity of 10 cartridges. The length of the weapon is 1270 millimeters, with the barrel length 650 millimeters. The manufacturer himself declares the maximum range of effective fire at a distance of 1000 meters, but then everything depends on the ammunition. The weapon has open sights, and the adjustable rear sight has the ability to adjust with a step of 100 meters to a distance of 600 meters.

In general, the weapon was initially quite good, let's see what was changed in it. And the change in the rifle is not so much. First of all, they added new fastening strips for additional devices. They added a normal pistol grip, and accordingly changed the butt. The flame arrester was modified, as well as a silent shooting device, but no one touched the base of the weapon, it remained completely the same as it was

It seems to me that all these changes were aimed only at the fact that the CB-98 rifle would become competitive in the foreign market, that is, the weapons are actively being prepared for export, which is a little sad. I am more than confident that if the need to modernize weapons was dictated by the domestic consumer, then it would have been produced at best in 5-10 years after the requirements had been formulated. In the military environment, this weapon was not distributed as it will not be. For themselves, "staked out" CB-98 FSB, the Ministry of Justice, and so on, and in fact such an addition would fit perfectly well to the already proven SVD.

In general, ammunition for special units is often purchased from us. Apparently the quality and ballistic characteristics of the western is better.

More precisely, I can not answer you, I myself am guided by the news.

    Class

No, not class. Here is an excerpt from the memo of the junior sniper instructor of the OMON: "SV-98
The rifle in the unit comes with a sports case. The case is not soft, it does not protect the rifle from possible shocks during transportation. The rifle enters the case only without a sight.

There are no ballistic tables in the manual of SV-98. Calculations have to be done on the BC calculator, which often does not coincide with the amendments in practice.
The manual should indicate all ballistic tables (for t, pressure, excess, etc. example: passport of the OSV-96 rifle) for ammunition 7n1, 7n14, "Extra" or at least the initial data for calculating on the BC.
Upon receipt of the new SV-98 rifle No. ......., when shooting it in the ballistics permit system, after the fourth shot, the trigger broke off her.
When cleaning the bore of the SV-98 barrel, you have to remove the butt cheek, which is long and dreary. Mounting should provide quick setting and removal of the cheeks. Butt plate adjustment is done with a wrench, although a “lamb” can be put in for adjustment without a tool. On the bed of the rifle there is a rail for installing a sports belt, there is no belt itself.
The rifle stock is bulky and angular, which is inconvenient during operation, especially after long carrying in the hands and making a quick shot in a sudden collision. For this reason, snipers descending into the TFR prefer the SVD. "
    And also in the same place: "POSP 4 - 12 x 42W
Mounting the sight does not fit the SV-98, you have to redo it yourself. The sight has a one-piece bracket, during installation, the alignment of the sight and the bore do not coincide (it is impossible to put linings), as a result of which when aiming the weapon the aim grid is not in the center, but somewhere on the edge. Which leads to difficulty, and sometimes not the possibility of an accurate shot. The clicks of the drum are not constant, which leads to the mixing of the STP. The image in the scope is brighter than in the Dedal scope.
    PPO 5-15 x 50
On the handwheels of the sight, the numbers are plotted from the side of the lens, which, when amended, leads to unmasking the sniper. The drums are very low and tight have an uneven stroke, rotate with difficulty. Correction angle is designed for shooting no more than 500m. The division price on the drum is not standard, which leads to difficulty and slowdown of calculations. When shooting, after the ninth shot, the sight went out of order, the multiplicity stopped changing, and the point of impact after each shot changes.
    Dedal DS 3-12 x 50 mst
The body of the sight is made very thin, when tightening the rings of the sight it deforms. The parallax tuning drum is not marked by range. To eliminate it, the manufacturer recommends that you aim the reticle at the target and shake your head if the reticle shakes, set the drum to the next division and shake your head again, etc., until it is eliminated. "
The rifle has been in operation since March 2010. According to him, the cost for which they come is transcendental. Cheaper and better quality Finnish "Tiko"

".... interview with the director of Izhmash, Kuzyuk:
        ...
        - The military complain about the poor quality of service and the overpriced price of the special production of your SV-98 sniper rifle. Is this true and how is it planned to solve the problem?

        - If a client is experiencing problems, then we must solve them, and as part of our restructuring, we change the attitude of both manufacturers and merchants to these problems. The situation with the maintenance of this rifle could be as follows, because within the framework of the previous structure, designers, merchants and production workers were in different legal structures, the reaction was slow, and the complaints were fair. Now we have changed this situation and made service provision a priority, so we will solve the problem. In addition, there were a number of technological complaints about this rifle: it was too complicated, and now we have already developed a rifle with new assembly principles and a new barrel, which will be more maintainable. In addition to the tactical sniper rifle, which we talked about and around which competition has now developed between Izhmash, foreign and even new domestic manufacturers, there is also a semi-automatic sniper rifle. We are releasing the Dragunov rifle in this class, and already in 2013 we plan to complete the development and launch testing of a new rifle with the best characteristics in this class, and in 2014 to put it into service. "..... as a result of modernization, the SV-98 received a new ergonomic stock made of aluminum alloys, on which all modern sights can be installed." The replacement of the stock had a positive effect on the accuracy of fire in difficult combat conditions, since aluminum alloys are more stable at temperature extremes ", - explained the interlocutor of the agency.

He noted that the upgraded rifle SV-98 will be more technologically advanced in production, and its price will be more competitive ....

The price for the SV-98 (before the modernization) came across "from 150 thousand rubles for naked and up to 250 thousand in the body kit."

I will also give an example of an employee of the special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in general, it coincides with your excerpt:

A club, but it shoots well. The passport contains the best group of 10 shots - 8,8 cm per 300 m. Assembly - in the best domestic traditions. When assembling the shutter at the factory, pins were inserted into the holes from below, and a guide plate was attached from above, which should be attached to the shutter by these pins. When attaching the bolt to the rifle, the bar fell down and jammed the bolt. I barely took it apart. Then he wondered how this strap is fastened. Bulky shops, obviously overcomplicated design. Sports unified case included - long for the rifle and does not fit the rifle with a silencer.
With sights to this rifle the whole epic happened. They entered the unit only with night sights. So they stood idle. Then one good man gave the unit an expensive Zeiss sight - Diavari 2.5-10-50T. A year later they received a 5-15x50 software. Then, after a considerable period of time, we got a Belarusian POSP 4x12-42W sight with mounts under the Weaver bar. Although the rifle is on a Picatinny rail. The fixing pins on the scope bracket, preventing longitudinal displacement, did not fit the guide on the rifle, which was corrected with a file. It turns out that for a couple of years the rifles were not used for their intended purpose due to the lack of sights.
The rifle is bulky and in terms of maneuverability loses to SVD. In practice, the accuracy of the SVD is quite at the level corresponding to the conditions of its application. In mountainous areas, the weight of the SV-98 is a significant burden. The lack of verification of time and operation reliability forces the sniper to take on the operation of the SVD, SVDS, or VSS, VSK-94. They are proven and reliable, and the SV-98 is often assigned the role of a rifle for competitions.

Belarussian optics came to our detachment. after several shots the brand fell on one side. an interesting corruption decision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs bought sights of 7 thousand rubles, and for citizens it cost 2.500 rubles in the store. good optics didn’t cost such money maybe the Chinese binoculars are cheaper. the guys bought good sights for their money. lyupold. nai frost. etc. But in Chechnya I took an old proven SVD.

And rightly so. SV-98, given the power of the ammunition, provides fire for the same 600 m, but it is more capricious (if only because the barrel is not chrome-plated), and less rapid-fire. But the presence of a silencer in the kit is good.

Something it is heavy for such calibers. Such weight would be good for a rifle under caliber 338LM.
Of course, the increased weight of the rifle always positively affects its accuracy, but then it is more likely a sports rifle.

The rifle as a whole is not bad, with a slight upgrade (bipod, muzzle, normal opt. Sight) it becomes very wow! In my opinion, the biggest problem is that the barrel is not chrome plated, cleaning takes long hours (even with good chemistry), and the barrel is very susceptible to corrosion (even with proper use). SVshka, so to speak, "police" rifle, for work in the city or for a separate exit of a sniper pair. Well, in the forest, mountains, etc. as part of a group, I think the SVDshka will be more useful (rate of fire and mobility).

This is confirmed by the fact that when using PBS, which, incidentally, is available in the initial set of weapons, accuracy is higher than when using a flame arrester
That pancake came up with PBS, this sound diffuser and not as PBS, similar to the ATG on the AK-74. Here's how, but in our OSPN (since 2010) this rifle fires quite normally 10-20 rounds at a time and nothing breaks there.
In mountainous areas, the weight of the SV-98 is a significant burden. The lack of verification of time and operation reliability forces the sniper to take on the operation of the SVD, SVDS, or VSS, VSK-94. They are proven and reliable.
I heard a lot from someone, I’m also special, the main reason why they don’t take St. 98 to the mountains is not at all, they don’t take it because there is a maximum fighting distance of 50-100 meters, there’s a bolt rifle to throw it into a fire for firewood Vsk or Vss for the eyes is enough.

I support! the user of this unit itself! by the way there is no accuracy with the diffuser above! and the speed of the bullet decreases, due to which there is a decrease in negative factors per bullet when fired! moreover, the bullet drop with and without PBS differs by half a meter at a distance of 300m! main disadvantage: poor build quality and overweight for such a caliber! 4-4,5 kg is enough! the store is overcomplicated, the nest for it is too deep, which greatly complicates the quick change and the latch is unreliable! but in principle, the file and labor will grind everything! about ballistic tables excuses are ridiculous! the sniper should know the ammo data by heart! and ideally, the special weapon should collect it itself, which is what experienced shooters do! the accuracy is normal for our caliber! you can put DTK (they are on the Internet!) It will be even better, but the barrel’s wear will increase! Plus-adjustment of the pulling force! In principle, a good thing against other similar products!

Guys, the rifle is, of course, "good", but also bad at the same time. Why? Without going into details I will say, at least what I have seen for a long time (4 years ago). Sniper and sport-hunting rifles. They are made entirely of metal. Aluminum receivers, aluminum orthopedic butts and freely floating barrels. The interesting thing is that there are opportunities to change barrels as quickly as possible, it is theoretically possible at all. The stool was demolished ... Nafig, and after 60 seconds a new postavish. The calibers in these new systems also change, due to the bolts and magazines, well, of course. ... I don't want to post pictures. The entire Internet is filled with such weapons. Orsis is certainly a step forward in accuracy ... But guys, each (well, almost), a good hunting and sporting rifle on the North American market UNDER THE MINUTE. It is necessary to invent what to create a new, detachable technical solution. Because, we cannot catch up with high-precision sniper weapons with traditional solutions. Think for yourself .....

This rifle, of course, will not compete with the SVD and is not ready to take it into service. For it there are no sights or cartridges. It is nothing more than a copy of foreign analogues, and will not be able to compete with them, because it is hopelessly late with its appearance. In the army, she appeared for a very simple reason - no one is buying it on the foreign market. The same thing has long been released in China, and the sights too, but at a price go up to 10 times cheaper. An open sight on such a gun is obvious anachronism, and attach it to a sniper rifle can only people with poor syndrome and where the optical sight is still considered a luxury. So, will we support our (almost domestic) Chinese manufacturer?

I can add that such a rifle, of course, is needed. It’s only customary to create a new cartridge first. Why did you make an aluminum box? Do we have no more winter? Or did the whole tree run out? The stainless steel for the trunks is also full, you can order any metal if we don’t cook in the cupola ourselves. If you recall the old Mauser-98, with its original cartridge, the production of which was started in 1898, it turns out that it is in no way inferior to this modern rifle in terms of battle accuracy, and surpasses it by an order of magnitude in reliability. locked up!
