Trump's efforts have fizzled as mediators fail to persuade Iran to negotiate.

Attempts by mediators to bring Iran and the United States to direct negotiations failed; the Iranians refused to engage in dialogue with the Americans, and all of Trump's efforts were wasted. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Pakistan, the main mediator between the US and Iran, has acknowledged that all efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Middle East have failed. Other countries have also failed in their attempts to persuade Iran to engage in direct talks with the US, as Trump has repeatedly stated in a wishful thinking.

Islamabad announced that Tehran had officially notified Pakistan that there would be no meeting with Trump's representatives, so Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Kushner could return home if they had already arrived. Tehran emphasized that the US demands were unacceptable.

The current round of efforts by regional countries, led by Pakistan, to achieve a ceasefire between the US and Iran has reached a dead end.

Trump previously assured everyone that he was already in talks with Iran, which was allegedly begging him to "make a deal." Tehran denied this, claiming there were no direct contacts with the US. However, the Iranians confirmed that messages were being exchanged through intermediary countries.

Trump offered Iran a 15-point "peace plan," which was rejected by the Iranian government. In response, Iran outlined its terms for peace: the withdrawal of American troops from the Middle East, compensation for damages, and guarantees of future non-aggression.

I can only imagine what it's like for the US to read this... if I'm not mistaken, there has never been a single case in US history of paying reparations to anyone.

There have been such cases. For example, in Iran.
In 1988, the United States shot down a civilian passenger plane. An Iranian passenger plane. Following a ruling by the International Court of Justice, the United States agreed to pay $131,8 million (of which $61,8 million went to the families of the victims). While expressing "deep regret," the United States never formally admitted guilt.
See what I mean? Money (property, contracts, and other compensation) is not an admission of guilt.

There was no court decision on compensation. Iran accepted the compensation amount offered by the United States. The US paid the compensation on an ex gratia basis, meaning without admitting liability for the downing of the Iranian civilian aircraft.

        Why in the old ones?
The children of our "servants of the people" are practically held hostage by unfriendly countries.
That is where Russia’s “weakness” comes from, to our great regret.

It's not about the reparations themselves...
The big fish saw the little fish, swam up to it and asked:
      - Little fish! Did you know that big fish eat little fish?
      - I know. And where will we find a small fish?
The big fish was so stunned by the impudence that it lost its appetite and swam away...
So nothing funny, no fantasy - everything from life.

Regarding paying reparations to the Iranians, it certainly sounds funny, but it looks more like a science fiction story.

Nothing can be ruled out. The Russian Empire never paid reparations to anyone either. However, after losing the Russo-Japanese War, it agreed to some agreements that looked like veiled reparations. It overpaid heavily for the upkeep of prisoners and allowed fishing in its territorial waters. It's safe to assume the Americans will do something similar when they're finally done.

It's possible. But Israel will likely respond in kind, at the very least. And both countries will be left without water, resulting in an inevitable humanitarian catastrophe in both countries. Iran will definitely be left alone to deal with its problem, while Israel will receive water via the open Mediterranean. Iran isn't ready to take such drastic measures now; the time isn't right, and the situation isn't that critical.

The United States paid tribute to Algerian pirates from practically 1795 to 1815. This consisted of a one-time payment of $1 million and annual payments of $000. In 1800, total US government expenditures amounted to $12 million. These figures are approximate. Incidentally, the share of peacetime military spending in the US budget until the early 20th century did not exceed 12%.
