French companies ArianeGroup and Thales Group are completing the development of a promising rocket The FLP-T 150 system will begin field testing in the coming months, and is expected to enter service within a few years. The new system is expected to improve the French Army's firepower. It is also expected to address several important organizational and political issues.

Promising project

On March 11, 2026, the French companies ArianeGroup and Thales Group announced their new joint project for the first time. They have recently been developing a promising ground-based self-propelled tactical missile system, designated FLP-T 150.

The reason for the emergence of the FLP-T 150 project was the negative situation in the missile forces and artillery France. Their current fleet of missile systems is not particularly high in terms of quantity or quality. Therefore, the development of a new system with improved performance, suitable for mass production, was necessary.

The exact start date for the work has not been announced. However, the project has already made significant progress. At this stage, the development companies are ready to present the appearance of the future complex, albeit in computer graphics form. Furthermore, the main plans for the near future have been revealed.

Thus, based on the results of current work, a prototype of the FLP-T 150 will be launched at the testing ground. The first firings will take place before the end of the first half of the year, but the exact date has not yet been disclosed. It is expected that the missile system will subsequently demonstrate the required performance level and receive a recommendation for adoption.

The LRU MLRS is a modified version of the M270 for the French Army.

The French ground forces are expected to be the primary customer for the new system. The FLP-T 150 may also be marketed internationally. Various countries are showing interest in systems of this type, and ArianeGroup and Thales Group could well expect to receive orders.

With enhanced performance

The developers presented the general design of the advanced missile system and outlined its key characteristics, although these are only preliminary estimates. The information disclosed provides a general overview and helps us understand the key features of the new project.

The FLP-T 150 is a self-propelled missile system armed with ballistic missiles with an estimated range of at least 150 km. This system is designed to engage various stationary targets, from concentrations of personnel to infrastructure. The system's functions and capabilities may be expanded in the future.

The ground-based components of the new tactical missile system are being developed by Thales Group. First and foremost, a self-propelled launcher has been developed. It will be based on a four-axle Mercedes-Benz Zetros 8x8 chassis. This vehicle will feature a protected cabin and a launcher for transport and launch containers with missiles. This self-propelled launcher should have high maneuverability and mobility.

The image shows a rectangular launcher, likely armored, with hydraulic guidance drives. Two longitudinal channels of this launcher house four missile launchers. Quadruple launch containers may be used, simplifying reloading and launch preparation.

The SPU will be equipped with the necessary fire control equipment. A combat vehicle of this type requires communications and navigation systems, a computer with the appropriate software, and missile guidance instruments. It is likely that a completely new fire control system will be used, in line with modern technology and customer requirements.

LRU at the training exercises

The FLP-T 150 rocket is being developed by ArianeGroup. It will be a solid-fuel munition of a conventional design with enhanced flight and combat performance. The rocket's dimensions and weight have not yet been specified, although the promotional image allows for a rough estimate of its length and diameter.

Thanks to modern technologies, the launch range will reach 150 km or more. The missile will also be equipped with a guidance/correction system that will ensure target deviations at any range will not exceed a few meters. The payload remains unknown.

Apparently, the FLP-T 150 system will only be equipped with one missile for now. Thanks to its superior flight characteristics, it will be able to perform missions typical of multiple launch rocket systems and tactical missile systems. However, the distinctive design of the SPU suggests the possibility of developing and deploying new munitions.

Tasks and expectations

Overall, the focus is on developing a new MLRS/SRBM with improved technical, combat, and operational characteristics. However, the situation in the French Army is such that the FLP-T 150 project is being tasked with more complex and challenging tasks. Whether the two developers will be able to meet these challenges remains to be seen.

The first task is to upgrade the French Army's rocket artillery/missile system fleet. Currently, the French ground forces have fewer than a dozen LRU-type combat vehicles—an upgraded version of the American M270 MLRS system. They are nearing the end of their service life and have limited performance characteristics.

The new FLP-T 150 systems are planned to replace existing LRUs in the medium term. This will provide the army with new equipment with a full service life and corresponding operational advantages. Furthermore, the system's key performance parameter, the firing range, is expected to double.

The problem of equipment obsolescence could be addressed by purchasing modern foreign-made models. However, this would still impose all the restrictions inherent in imports. In this regard, the new foreign-made system would not be fundamentally different from the existing LRUs. The FLP-T 150 project, meanwhile, would significantly reduce or even eliminate dependence on third countries.

Another important factor is long-term support for French industry. Thanks to the FLP-T 150 project, two major companies will be able to leverage and improve their expertise in developing land-based systems and missiles. Furthermore, serial production will increase capacity utilization and even create new jobs.

Complete solution

Thus, the new project from ArianeGroup and Thales Group addresses several different challenges simultaneously. It aims to re-equip missile units and improve their capabilities, support their industry, and mitigate potential risks.

A comprehensive approach to addressing a number of pressing issues is logical and offers the potential for significant results. However, it too has its pitfalls. Success in all planned areas is directly linked to the outcome of the new FLP-T 150 project. Improving the army's combat capabilities, increasing the demand for industry, and eliminating imports will only be possible if the new missile system meets its design specifications.

Otherwise, the French army will find itself in a more difficult situation. It will have to urgently search for a new MLRS/OTRK with suitable characteristics on the international market. Such a search will take time, and purchasing the selected model from abroad will be subject to certain restrictions. Furthermore, they will hinder the goal of import substitution and the transition to domestic products.

However, ArianeGroup and Thales Group are not pessimistic. They have already unveiled the design of the new missile system and promise to launch a fully functional prototype for testing soon. Barring any significant complications, the fate of the FLP-T 150 project will be determined in the next year or two. At the same time, the prospects for French rocket artillery will also become clearer.

This is M270, only on a French chassis.
