Iranian authorities have named the preconditions under which Tehran might agree to open unimpeded shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Iranian news agency Tasnim, Tehran is demanding the complete withdrawal of American troops and the closure of military bases in the Middle East, the return of Iranian assets frozen in the West, the guaranteed lifting of sanctions, and the development of international trade denominated in non-dollar currencies.
Meanwhile, following the lead of other US NATO allies, German authorities are flatly refusing to send their warships to the Strait of Hormuz. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Berlin's NATO commitments are limited exclusively to the alliance's eastern flank and the Atlantic and do not extend to the Middle East.
Although Berlin fully shares the US and Israel's anti-Iranian stance and also believes that the "mullahs' regime" must be ended, Pistorius notes that the precise means by which to overthrow the Iranian government "remains a subject of debate." The German Defense Minister is dissatisfied that the US and Israel, who, before the escalation of the Middle East crisis, limited themselves to what Pistorius considers relatively restrained criticism of Iran, are now seeking to draw almost the entire NATO bloc into the conflict. Pistorius, cautious in the case of Iran, believes that sending additional warships is unlikely to contribute to a task that even the US Navy has been unable to accomplish.
Currently, only Estonia, of all alliance members, has agreed to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz. However, according to Estonian Foreign Minister Tsakhna, Tallinn needs to know the US's ultimate goals in the Middle East and Trump's plan for achieving them.
