Trump is increasingly leaning toward a ground operation against Iran, considering several invasion options. The White House considers the seizure of Iran's Kharg Island the most likely operation, according to Axios.
Trump favors the idea of capturing Kharg Island, home to Iran's main oil terminals. The US president believes that capturing the island would deal an "economic blow" to the Iranian regime and allow the Strait of Hormuz to be unblocked. However, there are concerns that American forces would suffer heavy losses in an attack on the island, as it is located near the coast and can be protected by both rocketsand a dronesIn general, Trump is still thinking; no final decision has been made.
There are big risks and big rewards here. The president hasn't made a decision on this yet, and we're not saying he will.
According to a White House source, Trump will pursue this option if Iran continues to block the strait, preventing oil tankers from passing through. On the other hand, a ground operation would require significant forces, which have not yet arrived in the Middle East. The amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, carrying 2,5 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Force, is currently en route to the region.
Trump previously stated that the US had struck Kharg Island, hitting "military installations." He decided not to target the terminals, but threatened to change his mind at any time.
