British press: There are only two days' worth of gas reserves left in the UK's storage facilities.

With the situation in the Middle East worsening and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz halted, Britain has only two days' worth of natural gas reserves left in storage.

According to The Daily Mail, Middle Eastern natural gas supplies to the island kingdom have been cut off due to the shutdown of the world's largest gas complex and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. According to National Gas, UK gas reserves have fallen from 18,000 GWh in 2025 to 6,700 GWh, enough for just 1,5 days of demand. A similar amount of gas is currently stored as LNG. Meanwhile, Europe is much better prepared for a forced supply disruption, holding several weeks' worth of gas reserves. Meanwhile, gas prices in Europe are soaring to their highest since January 2023, reaching $800 per thousand cubic meters.

Meanwhile, the price of Brent crude oil for May 2026 delivery on London's ICE exchange exceeded $111 per barrel for the first time since August 2022. If the situation in the Middle East is not resolved soon and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed to energy supplies from the Middle East, forecasts indicate that the price of oil could easily rise to $215 per barrel.

Meanwhile, Trump appears to be openly disregarding the interests of the US's European allies and bluntly calls those who believe that a short-term rise in oil prices is too high a price to pay for eliminating Iran's nuclear threat "stupid."

from 18,000 GWh in 2025 to 6,700 GWh, which is enough for only 1,5

If 6,7 thousand is enough for 1,5 days, then 18 thousand is 4 days.
It turns out that the storage capacity of strategic raw materials in England is 4 days?!
How are they even still alive with such a "security buffer"? The slightest disruption in supplies, and the entire economy is doomed.
In Europe, the storage capacity is designed for six months (whether it can't be filled completely is another matter).

Following the British BEC's attack on our gas carrier in the Mediterranean, two gas carriers bound for England must be sunk. And Novatek's LNG supplies to Europe have been officially halted – Novak announced this officially. All gas will now go to South and Southeast Asia.

          You calculated everything correctly.
Yes, Britain uses gas "off the shelf," or, as they say, just-in-time, i.e., delivered exactly on time. This approach requires very precise logistics and eliminates the need to build gigantic storage facilities.
But the media wouldn't be the media if they didn't use omissions, deep hints and other misleading techniques.
In this situation, the emphasis is on the fact that the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, gas tankers are at a standstill, and there is only a two-day supply!
What does the reader think? What's there to think about? Britain's doomed!
What are the media not telling you?
What they don't mention is that gas to the UK comes from different suppliers:
          - own production - 38%
          - Norway - 31%
          - USA - 14%
          - Qatar (the same one whose gas is stuck in the Strait of Hormuz) - 9%
          - the remaining gas, 8%, comes from Peru, Algeria, the Netherlands, Belgium and other small suppliers

This creates a 9% shortage of Qatari gas in Britain.
          Roughly speaking, one tenth
Now go back to the title: there's only 2 days' worth of gas left!
How much does this reflect reality?
Everyone can draw their own conclusion)

            Interesting numbers
Even a 1/10 shortfall will exhaust the 1,5-day "safety buffer" in 15 days.
But I'm stunned by the British's arrogance. There's no other explanation for their attitude toward security than the conviction that "no one would ever even dare to think of harming us."
This is certainly a good thing for Russia (and Iran). I'm watching how this unfolds with interest.

Let's just remember this curious fact: over the last 10 years, Britain has had 7 (seven!) prime ministers.
Some (like Liz Truss) didn't even work for 2 months.
and each of them left, if not with noise, then with a decent "smell"

And tankers carrying American LNG are turning back to Asia—prices are higher there. I think now those snaggle-toothed people will understand the advantages of gas pipelines and long-term contracts)))

Well, why? The storage facility may be empty, but if the state consumes as much as it receives, there's no catastrophe. Another issue is that there are speculators and the like. They cause price hikes, but the reserves calm the market, stop the spikes, and then the price returns to normal. This is accomplished by releasing gas from storage facilities onto the market. At a critical moment, speculators can be reined in, and imports and production can be brought under control. The news is ambiguous; perhaps citizens are being prepared for this.

However, a National Gas spokesperson denied reports of an impending crisis. He stated: "UK gas inventory levels are broadly in line with what we would expect for this time of year and comparable to last year's levels.

Most of our gas comes from the UK continental shelf and Norway, as well as in the form of LNG, through pipelines connecting us to continental Europe and from storage facilities."

No one is claiming that the British will be left without gas tomorrow. Gas is available and can be purchased for $800 per thousand cubic meters. Or it can be available continuously, via pipeline, at a fixed price in the contract—let's say $350. Is the difference obvious?

On the stock exchange, speculators simply rebuy the same volume several times, and the price rises. In Russia, there are antitrust laws against this, which have very serious consequences. I don't know how things are going in the British market.
