Protective equipment for service dogs

Service dogs assist armed forces and law enforcement personnel in certain tasks and activities. Like people, they face the risk of injury and trauma and require personal protective equipment. Russian industry has taken these requirements into account and produces a wide range of different products to help preserve the life and health of animals.
Remedies
Various types of "armor" and other protective equipment for dogs have been known since ancient times. Special capes, collars, and other items were created for dogs to protect them from various impacts and injuries. Such protection was used in combat and hunting.
It is believed that the first modern protective equipment for dogs appeared in the 1990s in the United States. Then, enthusiasts, using available technologies and materials, created fully functional bulletproof vests for protection against cold. weapons, bullets, and shrapnel. Eye protection also soon appeared.
Subsequently, a full-scale development process for body armor and goggles began. New designs and material combinations, improved levels of protection, and so on were proposed. Furthermore, such products were adopted by various canine units in various countries. Furthermore, the new body armor was used in real-life operations and demonstrated its effectiveness.
Domestic development
As far as we know, Russian dog handlers became interested in foreign solutions in the early 2000s. Soon, at their request, the industry began developing its own analogues, and testing began in the middle of the decade.

Dogs in equipment from BPL Yarl
Initially, dog body armor was supplied to the Ministry of Internal Affairs' canine units. Then, the armed forces expressed interest. Production of such vests began at the request of both agencies. Furthermore, new protective designs with various features were developed and offered to canine handlers.
The development of canine protection received a new boost in 2022-23, following the start of the Special Operation to Protect Donbas. Service dogs are participating in humanitarian demining and other activities associated with known risks. Industry responded to these challenges by developing new products and equipment.
The new protective equipment has now entered mass production and is being supplied to canine units. Experience has already been gained using these products, including in real military operations and under real threats. Overall, the body armor has proven itself to be effective and provides valuable support to canine handlers and their dogs.
It's known that domestic dog protection systems have also attracted the interest of foreign customers. These products were exported to several neighboring countries. They quickly adopted advanced Russian practices, and service dogs received new protection against potential threats.
General solutions
At various times, several Russian companies and organizations have offered their developments in the field of "armor" for dogs. One of the first was the Center for High-Strength Materials "Reinforced Composites" (Armocom). The St. Petersburg Scientific and Production Association of Special Materials also presented its products. Currently, the company "BPR Yarl" is contributing to the safety of animals in service.

All such developments are based on common ideas. They are generally borrowed from human protective equipment, but are refined to take into account the specific needs of four-legged users. The result of this approach is body armor, protective goggles, and a variety of additional accessories.
Dog body armor comes in various designs, but is generally similar. The basic design is a textile vest with pockets for protective elements. This vest can be made as a blanket, covering the animal's body from above, encircling the sides, and fastening under the belly. There are also designs consisting of two covers connected by straps, covering the back and belly/chest.
Regardless of design, all types of bulletproof vests cover most of the back and sides, as well as the chest and abdomen. The head and legs remain exposed. Providing effective and comfortable protection for them is virtually impossible.
Manufacturers offer vests in a variety of sizes to suit different dog breeds. They are also adjustable to fit specific dogs using straps or Velcro fasteners. Some products feature additional protective features, such as a collar that covers the neck.
The vest's exterior may feature various additional features. For example, a leash or suspension ring is often placed on the back. This allows the dog to be attached to the handler's gear during parachuting. MOLLE webbing is provided on the sides for pouches, etc.

The vest's pockets contain protective elements. Canine vests use elements made of Kevlar or ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. These materials combine sufficient protection with low weight and flexibility. A vest with this type of padding does not cause significant discomfort to the dog. The animal quickly adapts to it and can move freely, remaining safe.
Dog body armor typically offers a limited level of protection—Br1 or Br2. The animal is protected from bladed weapons and impacts, pistol bullets, and light shrapnel. This protection also reduces the impact of more serious threats.
Protective helmets for dogs have not yet been developed. However, several manufacturers offer goggles and masks. These goggles feature a complexly shaped frame that conforms to the dog's anatomy. A plastic lens with sufficient protection is mounted within the frame. This mask is secured to the dog's head with straps. Special earmuffs are also used abroad. These help protect the dog's sensitive hearing from loud gunshots.
Applications
In the armed forces and security agencies, dogs perform several key tasks. For example, they perform security and patrol duties: they search for and, if necessary, apprehend intruders. In addition, service dogs search for potentially dangerous objects or illegal cargo. In particular, they assist bomb disposal teams in demining areas.
In general, a service dog can benefit from a bulletproof vest in all situations. For example, if the offender being detained is armed, and attempts to use a weapon cannot be ruled out, the handler and their dog must be protected from bullets or blades.

Protected and very dangerous (for the enemy)
Service dogs play a major role in detecting explosive ordnance. In some cases, an unauthorized detonation of such an object can occur, posing a threat to the animal and its handler. To address such situations, bomb disposal experts have various protective equipment, including body armor. Similar protection is now available for dogs.
Goggles and masks protect your eyes from dust and other contaminants, and even from certain hazardous elements. The necessity and benefits of such equipment are obvious.
Existing vests can be equipped with pouches containing essential equipment. This could include a first aid kit or medications, which the dog can then deliver to the recipient through a dangerous area. Furthermore, body armor is often equipped with suspension rings. This allows the handler to carry their four-legged companion or even parachute with them in certain situations.
Dog handlers note that body armor is simple and easy to use. A trained dog quickly gets used to the equipment and shows no signs of discomfort. Furthermore, the animal soon learns that it needs to don the equipment before going on a mission.
Extended approach
To improve the effectiveness of our soldiers, modern equipment and gear are being introduced into our army and other structures. The focus of these efforts is on equipping service personnel of all specialties. In recent years, similar measures have been taken with regard to service dogs.
Despite their apparent absurdity, body armor and other protective equipment for animals are of great importance. They help reduce risks, minimize negative consequences, and extend the service life of specially trained dogs. Such results fully justify the existence of such equipment and all the investment in its development.
