"Everyone is interested in how the Thor performs in a combat zone."

The World Defense Show, which takes place every two years in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's largest city, was initially designed based on the practical experience of its neighbors in the UAE, where two international arms forums have long been held: in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

But now, four years after the launch of the first arms exhibition in Riyadh, the new global arms marketplace in the Middle East is, without exaggeration, making waves around the world.

Over several years of intensive work, the Saudi forum has become a real competitor to its Emirati partners. This, however, doesn't seem to be a major concern for military analysts and journalists, as the exhibition in Riyadh generates an additional layer of modern military-technical information.

And, of course, Russia and its weapon are already traditionally present in Riyadh with their updated exhibition of weapons and military equipment.

Over the four days of the World Defense Show 2026 international arms exhibition in Saudi Arabia, thousands of guests and participants visited the Russian exhibit at this large-scale forum.

During the exhibition's business program, representatives of Rosoboronexport and Russian arms holdings held a series of meetings and negotiations with delegations from the security agencies of Saudi Arabia and other participating countries, as well as defense industry enterprises from the Middle East.

According to the Rosoboronexport press service, the Russian delegation discussed with its partners "issues of deliveries of Russian weapons products and the expansion of technological partnerships" aimed at "the joint development and production of weapons and military equipment."

Using unique technologies and experience of enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex, of course.

As we know, arms contracts don't like fuss and unnecessary publicity, so we'll leave it to our specialists to calmly carry out their difficult work of implementing new agreements. We, for our part, will take a look at some of the weapons types that attracted particular interest from guests and participants at the 2026 World Defense Show.

First and foremost, this is the air and missile defense segment, which is most in demand in modern combat due to the continuous development of air attack capabilities. This segment was represented at the Russian exhibit by specialists from the Almaz-Antey defense holding company.

It's worth noting that the Almaz-Antey Air Defense Concern is the largest integrated association in the Russian defense industry specializing in the development and production of aerospace defense systems. The weapons products of its member companies, which have supplied the militaries of partner countries since Soviet times, are renowned throughout the arms industry and continue to attract the attention of dozens of countries.

The models of modifications of the Russian anti-aircraft system deserved special attention from the delegations of the Middle East and African countries. rocket complex of the Tor-M2 family.

In Riyadh, the basic version of the export Tor-M2 air defense system was demonstrated, as well as the Tor-M2KM air defense system in stationary and mobile versions, the Tor-E2 air defense system on a tracked chassis, and the wheeled version – the Tor-M2K air defense system.

These short-range anti-aircraft missile systems are manufactured at the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant "Kupol" and are designed to protect land and sea military facilities and troops from attacks by aircraft, helicopters, cruise and operational-tactical missiles, aerial bombs and modern drones.

"Everyone is interested not only in the Tor air defense system's specifications, but also in how it performs in a combat zone," Oleg Golubev, a representative of the Almaz-Antey Air Defense Concern, told reporters. "We have a response to that. The positive characteristics and data we have confirm the system's capabilities."

According to the expert, these air defense systems, which can operate in conjunction with the Typhoon anti-aircraft gunner combat vehicle,Defense", providing cover from air threats even while on the march.

Military analysts note that the export potential of Russian Tor missiles remains high and has not been fully realized, especially in light of the constantly growing combat experience of these air defense systems.

Has anyone seen planes chasing birds???
By today's standards, confusing large birds/small numbers, like a wedge, with drones is not a difficult task! soldier

Birds have a lower RCS from their bodies than drones.

It's obvious... birds come in all shapes and sizes. I specifically wrote that a small wedge of very large birds was flying, and in that case, they would loom no worse than a single drone...
Incidentally, I was surprised myself, because the drone's speed was noticeably higher than that of the birds, and this is a significant indicator to avoid confusion in identifying an object's origin. BUT, the birds were likely caught in a tailwind and were flying very fast!!! Also, for migratory birds like these, the "arrival time" is TOO EARLY...
This happens to us, but VERY RARELY.
In short... it's like some kind of miracle. If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't have believed it... but there were birds flying and a dryer spinning around, and by the way, the text message warning was also present...

          Interesting, thanks.
My comment is too short and, in the opinion of the site administration, doesn't provide any useful information.... (Oh well, I'm just a bit well-mannered.)

Flight characteristics vary, as do the indicators. After all, under normal visibility, there are TOVs, etc. For a properly trained operator, identifying the target type is no problem.

Mistakes happen... the situation is tense, a lot of different things are flying around...
If I hadn't seen it myself, I'd doubt it... but the fact remains: I couldn't see anything but birds and a dryer. The clouds were low and thick, and everything was flying low and right over the house...
The last time I saw something like that, there was a real drone raid and I saw debris falling... right on the road. The Sukhoi was flying at about 500 meters, no higher, making three passes, but shot down the drone... it fell 3 kilometers short of the industrial facilities, no more.

Well, judging by the fact that in "Europe," for about three years now, they've been trying to "catch" and "attract" those who are only "suspected" of long-term supply of components for the Iskander-M, Tor-u, S-300, and many other things, the aforementioned systems and complexes "work" quite commendably...

In my understanding, these systems were supposed to cover any attack group, but in practice it turned out that they are not so effective against a swarm of drones.

Shotguns and sophisticated electronic warfare/anti-submarine systems are effective against a "drone swarm." And TOR missiles were developed to provide cover from other military equipment. Which the Kyiv Bandera Nazis haven't had in their personal combat zones for a LONG time, plain and simple.

It's only natural that interest in Russian air defense systems has increased. The good old Thor is performing as advertised. It's just not very good in its operational range.

The TOR-M2 performed dismally in the SVO. Its radar was completely unable to detect incoming FPV drones. It didn't react to them at all. There are dozens of videos of TOR systems being destroyed.
This is an air defense vehicle that itself must be carefully protected from drones.
TOR can shoot down a large drone or cruise missile flying above it at altitude.
    This is not enough.

You're looking at the wrong globe. Don't you think that firing a huge missile at a toy copter is...
TORs are medium-range air defense systems. Their targets are aircraft and tactical cruise and ballistic missiles.
FPV drones should be countered by local air defense systems with optical target detection systems (STS), in the form of robotic turrets and weapons on armored vehicles.

The Pantsir-SM air defense missile and gun system is quite effective at destroying small and medium-sized drones, especially its new special mini-missiles for destroying drone swarms. The TOR is a completely different anti-aircraft missile system, designed for different purposes.

Some people don't understand; they would shoot at a drone with an S-400 and then yell about how we ran out of missiles and why one missile is so expensive.

Yes, you're generally right. While the Tor-M2 itself isn't bad, it performed poorly against small targets like UAVs. Commentators here often complain about official lies, but they themselves are often no better – in the style of "there are no analogues." Moreover, they themselves are stretching the proverbial owl to the limit, claiming that it's a medium-range system, even though it's short-range.

Please provide your criteria and statistical data for the assessment you're approving. It seems to me that the primary assessment criterion is combat effectiveness, which creates conditions that prevent the enemy from further completing a combat mission while inflicting maximum and unacceptable damage, as well as minimizing damage to the protected target from an air strike while maintaining a cost-benefit ratio.
