"Strike objectives achieved": Defense Ministry confirms use of Oreshnik missiles in Ukraine

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the use rocket The Oreshnik medium-range missile system was launched against Ukraine. The Defense Ministry emphasized that the system was used during a massive retaliatory strike.

On the night from Thursday to Friday, January 9, the Russian Armed Forces launched a massive strike on Ukraine with high-precision missiles. weaponsAccording to a statement from the Ministry of Defense, the strike was carried out in response to an attack by Ukrainian drones at the residence of the Russian president in the Novgorod region. They were used drones- kamikazes of the Geranium type, as well as sea- and land-based missiles, including the Oreshnik.

In response to the Kyiv regime's terrorist attack on a residence in the Novgorod region, carried out on the night of December 29, 2025, the Russian Armed Forces launched a massive strike with long-range, land- and sea-based precision weapons, including the Oreshnik medium-range mobile ground-based missile system, as well as attack unmanned aerial vehicles.

Critical targets were targeted, with the main strikes targeting Kyiv and the Lviv region, targeting drone manufacturing plants and energy infrastructure facilities. Specifically, the Bilche-Volicko-Uherske underground gas storage facility (UGS), Europe's largest. It was there that the Oreshnik missile was launched. The Ministry of Defense emphasized that the strike's objectives were achieved.

Kyiv also suffered quite a bit. Information from the Telegram channel "War Correspondents of the Russian Spring" at 09:35 AM Moscow time:
Kyiv and its suburbs are experiencing a complete blackout: authorities don't know when the power will be back on.

The power outage was caught on camera. There is no power in the capital itself, as well as in the Boryspil district and parts of the Brovary district.
DTEK stated that they don't know when the situation in the city will be stabilized. Local residents are outraged that no shutdown schedule has been provided.

The Ukrainian General Staff, as always, cheerfully reported the downing of drones, Kalibr missiles, and Iskander missiles. The effectiveness of Ukrainian air defense operations is at 90%. Who would have doubted it? smile

A furious reaction followed from Kyiv. Call for an urgent UN Security Council meeting to address Russia's "reckless actions!" The European continent is under threat, a general alert! negative
Kyiv is initiating an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council and the Ukraine-NATO Council in response to Russia's statement on the use of the Oreshnik missile in the Lviv region, according to Foreign Minister Sybiga.

"Such a strike near the EU and NATO border poses a serious threat to the security of the European continent and is a test for the transatlantic community. We demand decisive action in response to Russia's reckless actions. We are informing the United States, our European partners, and all countries and international organizations of the details of this dangerous attack through diplomatic channels. We are initiating international action – an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council, as well as retaliatory measures within the EU, the Council of Europe, and the OSCE," Sybiga laments.

The storage facility doesn't supply consumers; it's just a storage facility. It operated within the EU's common gas transportation system. During transit, EU consumers purchased gas under long-term contracts and spot deliveries through Sudzha until January 2025, when it was shut down. In other words, after Sudzha, the gas belonged to the EU. The storage facility itself and its infrastructure were used to receive gas from Russia and supply it to the EU, and any talk of reverse flow... well, that's just it. Nothing changed; gas was simply taken from the export pipeline in the East and Central Asia, fresh from storage, and the EU paid us for it for Ukraine. The attack is aimed at the EU economy.

376 Ukrainian subscribers multiplied by the lie factor (LF) = 10000, and we get 3,760,000 Ukrainians. Now, let's compare.

The underground gas storage facility itself is like a porous sponge.
It's physically impossible to destroy the underground gas storage facility, and the compressor station was destroyed a year and a half ago. Oreshnik can only disable the turbines on the surface. The last time the Kinzhal probe visited there was on the 24th spring.

I had to do repairs to underground storage facilities in one area.
It's not gas, but oil. One of the largest storage facilities of national importance.
For conventional projectiles, its destruction is a difficult task.
We opened the entrance by simply removing the slabs, and a tractor could drive in. We removed the layer of stearin or paraffin and concreted the inside. On the outside, there were several layers of PAG—that's double-reinforced airfield adhesive. Everything was sealed with bitumen.
Modern means like Fab would probably penetrate it. But it's still a sturdy thing, completely buried in the ground. Only part of the lid is visible above.
        1. +2
          9 January 2026 11: 23
FABs might not penetrate. When an explosion occurs, the energy disperses in a sphere, so most of the blast energy will be directed in the wrong direction. And the Oreshnik doesn't carry explosives, only dummies. All the energy from the impact is directed in the direction of travel, that is, downwards. Plus, there are about six of them, dummies. The result, I think, is clear. Especially considering the speed is 13,000 km/h... smile

There is no gas there, but oil.

Gas fields are structured differently. They don't have artificial reservoirs. They're natural rock strata, depleted gas fields, or simply porous ones, located at depths of hundreds of meters and stretching for tens of kilometers. Dozens of wells are drilled into them, covering areas of hundreds of square kilometers, where the gas is pumped in and out. These are artificial fields, usually former fields that have been depleted.

Gas reservoirs are a completely different animal from natural oil or gas deposits. These are reservoir layers (porous rocks) and cavities located at depths of hundreds of meters, which are unrealistic to destroy; the reliance is more on the destruction of wellbores and engineering equipment.

Then it's completely unclear why they would target the UGS facility with the Oreshnik missile. It wouldn't penetrate rock to a depth of 400 meters, and the entire value of the facility lies in the ground infrastructure, which would suffer little damage from a hole in the ground, unless a pipe extending deeper into the ground is hit. So it turns out that it's more effective to strike with Kalibr and Iskander missiles with a conventional high-explosive warhead or an incendiary one, like the Tornado-S. The question is, do our missiles have such warheads?

          Why did you decide so?
The Oreshnik's speed is 13,000 km/h. Since the projectiles fly ballistically downwards toward their target, I suspect the impact speed will be higher than 13,000 km/h: physics still applies. The projectile will travel a certain distance before it evaporates, and then it's kinetic energy, and quite warm at that... smile There, I think, breaking through not 400, but even 500 meters is not a problem.

Andrey, the internet is our friend! The underground gas storage facility in Stryi is 800 meters deep and holds approximately 17 billion cubic meters. I've seen reports of a strike on this underground gas storage facility last year, where it was "finally buried," and now here we go again...
This morning, Russian Aerospace Forces launched another strike on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The missile attack reportedly destroyed a gas terminal located in Stryi, near Lviv.
            Article dated 11.04.2024/XNUMX/XNUMX
            Further from 11.01.2025
The Russian Ministry of Defense identified the ground infrastructure of the largest underground gas storage facility in the city of Stryi in the Lviv region as one of the successfully destroyed targets.

And now, a year later, the "Oreshnik" strike... I want to believe it was successful.

Now, I think the attack wasn't aimed at the infrastructure, but at the storage facility itself. Since the news you cited mentioned the terminal and ground infrastructure. And yes, I'd like to believe it was successful. Spending several Oreshniks on a single target is expensive.

So it turns out that all the previous strikes on this UGS facility didn't cause critical damage, as our media and reports from the Russian Ministry of Defense would have us believe. Otherwise, why strike an empty UGS facility again? It turns out that they probably damaged something on the ground before, but the UGS facility itself still contained gas. And after some time, the Ukrainians restored the ground infrastructure and began using the UGS facility. We'll see what happens after the Oreshnik strike. I hope they manage to shift the rock around the wells and rupture them. Then, to get gas out of there again, they'll have to drill new wells.

Well, I think you're overestimating our media... And the Ministry of Defense could have simply worded it incorrectly. There was a strike on the infrastructure, it was completely destroyed. But only the infrastructure, not the storage facility. The Ministry of Defense, without going into details, announced its destruction. Everyone thought the underground gas storage facility had been destroyed, but it was actually about the infrastructure.
We'll see what happens after the Oreshnik strike. I hope it will displace the rock around the wells and rupture them. Then, to get gas back from there, we'll have to drill new wells.

        I worked for Severgazprom.
I used to do my work there, both at compressor stations and at wells.
        From Ukhta to Samotsvetnaya.
We installed measurements and control systems at the stations. I even visited the booster stations.
At the well, the pressure on a new one can be decent, about 30 kilograms,
Then, as production progresses, it drops to 16 kg.
The well itself is a spitfire. There's a "tree" of a pipe hung with pressure gauges and sensors.
You can tear everything apart with a grenade.
But 16 atm is not enough for gas transport. They divide production and transport.
Transport workers use special compressors to increase the pressure to 70 atm. Then it flows normally through the pipe.
Everywhere the gas is dried, removing water and condensate.
I watched locals fill their cars with liquid condensate. It was either done through connections or for a small fee.
Asked how it is? They say it drives great.
At compressor stations, the gas is accelerated and the pressure is also increased.
This is a very impressive structure.
25 huge 2-story compressors roar so loudly that you can't hear anything without headphones.
22 workers, the rest are reserves.
The exhaust pipes were scorching hot. We hung mushrooms overnight, and in the morning they were dry and smelled like bread. I brought a Kraft bag and two buckets of lingonberries. Not everyone lives on the "pipe" there; the rest sell what they collect.
        Cheap.
I bought berries and buckets for my travel expenses. Nia had her own plane. And a car inside. Convenient.
That's a pretty big deal to destroy the KS. It's hard to restore...

Well, it's clear that the mattress-makers, by agreement, need to be warned about the launch of such a missile. What's not clear is why the enemy would need to know where the strike on Salorikh would be carried out and at what time. Such goodwill isn't stipulated in the agreements. Absolutely not. Then why make any concessions to the enemy? Naturally. The mattress-makers immediately pass this information on to the Ukrainian fascists. And they manage to remove all the expensive equipment and warehouses with Tomahawks. Well, let's put it this way: he didn't just join NATO yesterday, and besides, for the last eight years he's been more of an irritant to NATO than an ally, pursuing his own policies in the Middle East, claiming to be the regional hegemon. As for selling weapons to the Bandar-logs, we also sold weapons to the Syrians. We may not like it, but we can't stop him from selling weapons. He has no allyship obligations to us, and he's simply making money off this conflict, just like the Chinese.

"On the night between Thursday and Friday, January 9, the Russian Armed Forces launched a massive strike on Ukraine using precision-guided weapons. According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense, the strike was carried out in response to an attack by Ukrainian drones on the Russian presidential residence in the Novgorod region." The response doesn't quite add up. They tried to strike the Russian presidential residence, but the strike ended up in a underground storage facility instead of the Ukrainian presidential residence. The response should be proportionate: they hit our residence, and we hit theirs.

What nonsense, they're again justifying this attack as being for what they did to the residence. It feels like we're fighting for one person, and not even for the rest of the dead in the Kherson region. And before the attack, our Americans (either friends or bosses) reported that there would be an attack on Ukraine. Again, they reported everything.

"Strike targets achieved": Ministry of Defense confirms use of Oreshnik missiles in Ukraine."
I, and many Russians, are, of course, very pleased with the Oreshnik strike. At the same time, I'm not sure that the strike's "objectives" were achieved. Gas in storage facilities of this type is under pressure of up to 120 atm, the same as in high-pressure main pipelines. This means that the flames emitted through the holes from the Oreshnik missile's red-hot projectiles would have been very high (50 to 100 meters!!!).
An example is the explosion at Gas Distribution Station No. 2 in the village of Rozhdestvenskaya in Stavropol Krai. According to the Southern Regional Center of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, in the first minutes after the disaster, the flame column from the damaged pipe reached 100 meters in height (https://gudok.ru/content/incident/873712/?ysclid=m7n2i1quts44813856).
However, I didn't see such flares in the photos from the scene in Ukraine. Perhaps one of the knowledgeable commentators could explain why such tall flares aren't visible in the photo of the Oreshnik strike? Thanks in advance!

The strike was probably good, and maybe even excellent. I would also like to hit the Beskydy Tunnel to disrupt supplies, and maybe also destroy at least part of the Dnieper bridges to worsen supplies to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in eastern Ukraine.
