"Golden Eagles" is one of the few helicopter groups in the world, which demonstrates figures of higher and medium complexity both in vertical and horizontal planes at extremely low altitude, on combat helicopters Mi-24 (now Mi-28Н), which in normal time is used to improve the flying skills of the officers of the center, as well as on the use of weapons at the site. The participation of pilots of the Berkut aerobatic team has become traditional at the aerospace show in Zhukovsky, at the aviation festivals of Moscow, Vladimir, Tula, Samara, Syzran. In 1979, the Center for Combat Use and Retraining of Army Aviation Crews was created in Torzhok, in which pilots of the highest category are trained and subsequently given the qualifications of “pilot-sniper” and “navigator-sniper”. So, in 1989, on the basis of this Center, the Berkuty aerobatic helicopter group was created. The organizer of the group was Hero of the Russian Federation, Honored Military Pilot, Major General Boris Vorobyov.
At first the group consisted of three pilots who began training flights. Later the composition was replenished.
The first aerobatic team included Colonels Alexander Rudykh and Alexander Chichkin, Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Kalish, Captains Alexander Bardakov and Nikolay Spichkin. The group expanded, the pilots came in love with their profession: Lieutenant Colonel Sergey Zoletev, Alexander Novochenko. The flights in the group were performed by Major V. Tsymbalov, Captain A. Anikin, Major M. Iluykin, Major A. Egorov, and Major S. Yaborov.
So, 10 on April 1992 of the year, the group performed the first demonstration flights at the Kubinka airfield, at an aerospace festival in honor of Cosmonautics Day. Later "Golden Eagles" began to train in the six Mi-24. Recognition of skill "Berkuty" received in the air parade over Poklonnaya Hill in honor of the 50 anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War (1995).
The peculiarity of the group is that, unlike many of its colleagues, the Berkuts also showed elements of combat training, for example, the actions of a group of helicopters to cover the landing of a tactical air assault force, blocking the area of search and rescue operations, group air combat of helicopters and much more.
Since the founding of the aerobatic team to the present day, the work of its participants, pilots of the Center for Combat Use and Retraining of the flight personnel of army aviation, is based on its own enthusiasm. Participation in air shows, shows, celebrations does not bring any profit to Berkuts. This is another feature that distinguishes the Russian helicopter flight team from foreign colleagues.
In July, the 2012 aerobatic team of the Russian Air Force "Berkuty", moved to the new Mi-28H "Night Hunter" helicopters, and will now promote this car in international markets, showing the flight capabilities of the machine.
12 April 2013, the Berkut aerobatic team will be 24 years old. Over the years, four flight crews have changed. The Torzhok center and group survived the difficult economic period of the 90s. There are six Mi-28H helicopters in the group. The machines of the Torzhok center, Andrei Mikhailidi, Sergey Bakin, Dmitry Menyaylo, Igor Butenko, the participant of the first flights of the group Sergey Zolotov and the second pilot at the beginning of 90-s Alexander Zolin now show the highest skill on these machines.
In 1990, at the Bora airbase began and история the Berkut direct competitors from Czechoslovakia - the aerobatic team on four Mi-24, later known as “Hinds”. At the 100 anniversary of the Air Force, the first demonstration of the Mi-28H flight capabilities by the Berkuts was held. The pilots of this group showed a very difficult flight program, individual and group aerobatics. And this show played a positive role: several countries have already returned the Mi-28 to the shortlist of bidders, from where these cars were excluded after failing to tender in India in 2011.
Due to technical problems with the main rotor and armament on the Indian tender in 2011, the American AH-64D Longbow Apache helicopter bypassed the Russian Mi-28H. In total, from 2008 to 2012 a year, three Night Hunters crashed due to equipment failure.
The main problem of the Mi-28 before the design change in 2011 was the main gearbox, which rotates the main screw. When working for more than two hours, it overheated, which caused the screw to stop. In addition, according to the military, the designers of the Rostvertol, which manufactures the helicopter, have not been able to debug the work of all the onboard electronic systems for a long time.

The Mi-28H "Night Hunter" is usually compared to the American rival, AN-64 Apache. These are very close cars. Even outwardly, they are similar. Both the Mi-28H and Apache are single-rotor, carry a non-retractable undercarriage, a pair of engines on the sides of the fuselage, X-shaped tail rods on the tail.

Mi-28H is heavier than Apache almost on 3 tons, but more powerful engines compensate for this with interest. The ratio of power to take-off weight is better. Gas turbine engines with 2200 horsepower. provide maximum flight speed in 324 km / h and cruising - in 265 km / h. Compare: Apache has a maximum - 365 km / h, but cruising - exactly the same 265 km / h.
Fuel is poured into soft tanks with a total capacity of 1900 l with a latex self-retracting tread. This is enough for practical range in 460 km, and when installing additional tanks for the haul - up to 1100 km.

At the top of the fuselage, behind the main rotor there is an auxiliary power unit with a separate engine for driving the systems and starting the main power unit. Mi-28H able to fly normally and with the complete failure of one of the engines.
