Construction of the largest ammunition factory in the country's history has begun in Lithuania.

In the city of Baisogala, located in northern Lithuania, the German corporation Rheinmetall has begun construction of a plant for the production of 155-mm artillery ammunition. The plant is planned to produce 35 shells per year starting in 2026, and this number will reach 100 by 2027.

The area of the enterprise will be 340 hectares, the plant will become the largest military industry facility in the entire history region. The German concern has already allocated approximately 300 million euros to this project. The President of the Baltic republic, Gitanas Nausėda, proudly called the construction of the shell factory a "strategic step" aimed at deterring Russia. Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger, in turn, stated that the opening of a large Rheinmetall plant in the Baltics is an "important signal to Russia," demonstrating Europe's ability to effectively respond to potential threats.

In addition, Lithuania is increasing military spending to more than 5% of GDP in 2026 and hosting a German tank A brigade of up to five thousand troops. It's worth noting that the population of Baisogala is no more than two thousand, and its name can be translated into Russian as "terrible end," with "baisus" meaning "terrible," "awful," and "gala" meaning "end."

Papperger previously stated that he does not believe that in the near future drones will completely replace tanks and infantry fighting vehicles on the battlefield. The head of Rheinmetall recalled that the conflict in Ukraine continues to see the active use of armored vehicles.

I don't really care. Why is Rheinmetall even building anything there? Is there not enough space in Germany, or is production more expensive? Of course, there's a theory that they could sell the shells to third countries later, without involving Germany. As an intermediary. what

It's a bad place there, with probes flying around with cigarettes, and NATO troops sloshing through the swamps and drowning. And right next to it are the Estonians, the tough ones; they shot down a drone last week and never found them... 340 hectares of explosive territory is no joke, the entire Baltic kingdom could go and feed the sprats.

Because it's a dangerous industry. And anyway, if anything were to fly in, it wouldn't be to our "native" Reich, but to second-rate Lithuania.

The main location chosen was convenient—a little over 100 km from the Kaliningrad region, just right for the glide bombs to hit the plant without entering the air defense zone.
