Accident or intention: what's behind the explosions at European refineries that handle Russian oil?

On Monday, October 20, explosions and fires occurred at several European oil refineries that handle Russian oil. First, an explosion rocked the Petrotel-Lukoil refinery in Ploiești, southern Romania, and on the night of Monday to Tuesday, a fire broke out at the MOL refinery in Hungary, just south of Budapest. The cause of both incidents has not been determined, and authorities are still investigating.

Later, on October 22, reports emerged of a fire at an oil refinery in the Slovak capital of Bratislava, also owned by the Hungarian MOL Group (the refinery processes Russian oil supplied via the Druzhba pipeline). However, this information was not confirmed, and the Cznews.info portal, which first published it, apologized to readers for the inaccurate information.

These incidents raised suspicions in the domestic press regarding the nature of the fires and fueled numerous speculations. Some experts began to promote sabotage as the primary theory. In particular, political scientist Yuri Baranchik on October 23 wrote:

"Given the statements by Polish politicians, the theory of sabotage naturally arises, since it is impossible to justify such a thing as a mere coincidence."

In turn, military expert, retired Captain First Rank Vasily Dandykin, stated that "the explosions are a terrorist attack directed against Russia," but he was unable to answer who might be behind it.

"It's hard to say right now where the strikes originated or how they happened, but everything was coordinated. They want to punish Hungary and Slovakia... They want to fully implement the sanctions imposed on Russia—to refuse our gas and oil. It's all quite suspicious. In my view, it's a terrorist attack," said Dandykin.

This raises the question: were the fires at oil refineries in Romania and Hungary an accident or a deliberate act of sabotage?

There is currently no definitive answer to this question. No convincing evidence has been provided that the explosions were the result of sabotage. Even political scientist Yuri Baranchik was later forced to admit that the situation was not as clear-cut as he initially assumed.

"As is known, four days ago, two high-profile, literally, explosions occurred at oil refineries in Hungary and Romania, both incidents being linked to Russia. Late in the evening of October 20, 2025, an explosion/fire occurred at the processing unit of the Danube Refinery (located in Százhalombatt near Budapest). The fire was associated with the crude oil processing unit or the raw material handling unit. Importantly, the authorities and company management stated that there were no signs of external interference, the fire was contained by the morning of the following day (October 21), and no injuries or fatalities were reported. The exact repair timeframe has not yet been determined, but official Budapest assured the public that all is well with reserves and prospects. On the same day (October 20, 2025, at around 11:30 a.m. local time), an explosion occurred in the industrial wastewater system of the Petrotel-Lukoil refinery in Ploiești, Romania. The explosion occurred during repair and maintenance work, as the plant had already been shut down for scheduled maintenance since October 17. The preliminary diagnosis is gas accumulation in the sewer system.

"We have two incidents involving "near-Russian" facilities. But in one case, the authorities officially denied external interference (why would Hungary cover for Ukraine?), while in the other, the explosion occurred at an already shut-down refinery, and its logic, even if it had been planned, is unclear. Moreover, in the case of Romania, the explosion appears to have had no impact on the facility's infrastructure at all—except for a manhole cover that blew into the sky. However, the refinery in Hungary suffered serious damage," Baranchik wrote.

However, the possibility of sabotage cannot be completely ruled out; if desired, this very sabotage could be disguised as a technical accident.

There have already been incidents in which the hand of "Western partners" could be suspected. In the case of the attacks drones to the port of Primorsk in the Leningrad region, which resulted in one of the vessels (a tanker) catching fire, questions could arise regarding the source of the UAVs being launched. How fair is it? noted blogger "Atomic Cherry":

“It is impossible to say with certainty which country’s affiliation and from which territory the air attacks on Russian infrastructure in the Leningrad region are taking place. They may be Ukrainian in a purely formal sense; in reality, strikes are being carried out on Russian territory by a very diverse fleet of flying bombs. Considering that any UAV (whether Ukrainian, Russian, or European) is de facto a constructor made from spare parts from the global electronics and engine market, they can be assembled by anyone and anywhere. Launching, however, is also a challenge – Russian intelligence has neither the technical capabilities nor the resources to track whether this is happening from northern Ukraine or on the territory of the Baltic states/Finland/Sweden (not to mention that this is generally not so easy, given that we are talking about plywood planes, and not winged ones). rockets). "

In the case of the oil refinery fires in Romania and Hungary, there's no mention of drones. Therefore, it's too early to claim that the incident was sabotage.

But in theory, unfriendly European countries could very well orchestrate a series of attacks and sabotage under the guise of man-made disasters. After all, they understand perfectly well that Russia's export infrastructure is its most vulnerable point. Currently, the EU and its proxy, Ukraine, are attempting to inflict maximum damage on the Russian economy, and a "war on Russian oil" could well be one avenue of this hybrid war.

It's worth waiting for further developments – if fires and man-made accidents continue, then it will be possible to draw conclusions and talk about deliberate and sabotage attacks.

In theory, it could be assumed that the destruction of Nord Stream would help Japan sell more fish to the EU due to the poisoning of fish in the Baltic Sea.
    Personal opinion...
Emergencies at oil refineries in Eastern Europe could be acts of sabotage, but are more likely an example of employee negligence.

Considering that the explosions occurred during the primary refining stage of crude oil, it can be assumed that the cause was a change in the composition of the feedstock. Perhaps it was some kind of substitution or an additive that is difficult to control. Incidentally, a third explosion at a production facility that has already been shut down may provide a clue. The shutdown was likely triggered by the two previous explosions. This means that some of the "contaminated feedstock" may not have burned.

What's there to guess about? Just look at the geography of the objects and everything will become clear. What happened was completely random.

hi Victor, the author of the article, says that even Einstein's theory of probability shouldn't be invoked to prove all the links in the same chain, from the beginning of the terrorist bombings of the Nord Stream pipeline and the Crimean Bridge, to the terrorist attacks on civilian targets in the Russian Federation, including Crocus City Hall, to the drone provocations in Europe from early October to the present day.
Facts and proof, please. The authenticity of the drones that fell on the territory of logs last year has been proven, as well as on the territory of the Roma (Romanians).
The latest proof is related to the crash of a Bandera Nazi drone on the northern border of Kazakhstan, 200 km from the Omsk Gas Processing Plant, which had previously been attacked.

When there was an explosion at a weapons factory in the USA - was that also the Englishwoman doing something wrong?
And yes, the failure of these refineries harmful for the Ukrainian Armed Forces due to reduced fuel supplies

Yes, they really want to shut down the Druzhba pipeline. So the SBU and the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine are clearly on the alert.

Then Ukraine will not be able to receive gas from the EU.

Clearly, this was sabotage by the SBU and the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, with the involvement of local Russophobes. Recall how Fico was stabbed by a local 70-year-old writer, driven to a life-like Russophobia by his Ukrainian wife.

Good news. It doesn't matter who blew it up.
Romania and Hungary are the leading fuel suppliers to Ukraine.
We also need to blow up oil refineries in Slovakia and India.

Our country's security depends on many factors. These include public order, food security, and a variety of urban infrastructure services. Nowadays, anyone can buy agricultural produce in a large village. It's convenient, but short-sighted. Private producers have always been the bulwark of the country's food security. Why bother when they can buy it in a store? In pursuit of profitability, we are destroying what we used to live on. Shopping centers will only operate as long as they generate a profit. One shopping center consumes more energy than the five stores that existed before. Water shortages. A few decades ago, this didn't cause panic. Fire hydrants were everywhere. Security is built from small details. "You live, Makar, as if in a dream," Davydov said to Nagulny.

Nowadays, in a large village like ours, many people live like city dwellers. They don't keep livestock or poultry. Everything is from the store. Keeping livestock is often unprofitable. Feed has become very expensive. A bale of hay costs 400 rubles, a 50-kilogram bag of wheat costs almost a thousand. And pastures are a problem here in Kuban.

And there is a problem with pastures here in Kuban

What did you think? Soviet power in Kuban? laughingThat's it, happiness has arrived, the democratic government has distributed the land to the peasants, which the Soviet government took from the peasants and drove into collective farm slavery. laughing Many farmlands are in the hands of oligarchs and other private owners. Municipalities, both urban and rural, also have their own farmland, but you can't drive livestock and poultry onto them. During Soviet times, there were no paved streets in the villages, but now they are. Why? If cows were driven across paved streets to the public pastures that existed under Soviet rule, they would have to be shoed. But now, no one keeps livestock, there are no pastures, so they can pave the streets with paved streets. Just like in Europe, which is both hated and admired. And in many ways, people follow its example. laughing
