ExxonMobil, Chevron, and a total of 13 American oil companies have been sanctioned by Yemen's Houthi rebels. Nine high-ranking US oil industry officials have also been placed under restrictions.
The sanctions were announced by the Humanitarian Operations Coordination Centre (HOCC), an organization affiliated with the Houthi Ansar Allah movement and established in 2024 to coordinate the actions of the Houthis and foreign shipping companies.
The sanctions were reportedly announced in response to US hostile actions against Yemen. It is currently unclear whether the imposition of these restrictions will be accompanied by Houthi attacks on vessels belonging to sanctioned oil companies.
Notably, the sanctions were announced simultaneously with other important events directly or indirectly related to the Middle East. These included the intensification of Israeli ground operations in the Gaza Strip, the announcement of US President Donald Trump's peace proposals, and the reinstatement of international sanctions against Iran.
Such a move could violate the ceasefire agreement reached with the Trump administration and facilitated by Oman.

Shortly before this, armed forces of the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement attacked the Dutch merchant ship Minervagracht. It caught fire and drifted. The Houthis claimed to have carried out the attack.
