German company Helsing SE continues to work in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles aviationA few days ago, she first announced her new project, designated CA-1 Europa. In this project, she will use her accumulated experience to create a promising "loyal wingman"-class UAV capable of escorting manned aircraft and performing combat missions.



Growing scale


Helsing was founded in Munich in 2021. It develops new control systems for unmanned systems and creates air and sea platforms based on them. To date, the company has introduced several electronic systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and unmanned underwater vehicles.

The company previously announced plans to develop full-size, heavy-duty UAVs. To this end, in June 2025, it acquired the aircraft manufacturer Grob Aircraft SE from H3 Aerospace GmbH. Its experience and expertise were intended to be utilized in the development of new projects.

The first result of this joint work was presented several days ago. On September 25, a presentation of the new project took place at the Helsing plant in Tussenhausen, Bavaria, Germany. The promising full-size UAV was designated CA-1 (Combat Aircraft-1) and nicknamed Europa.


So far, only a full-scale model of the new UAV is being demonstrated, highlighting its main design features. Key specifications and future capabilities have also been revealed. droneHowever, some of the information that is of greatest interest is not published.

Helsing SE reports that the CA-1 project is still in the development stage, but its completion is imminent. It plans to build a fully functional prototype drone for flight testing no later than 2026-27. The first flight is planned for 2027. To meet this deadline, the company plans to invest hundreds of millions of euros in the project and attract new participants.

Testing and development of the Europa are expected to be completed early next decade. The new UAVs could enter service with a hypothetical customer in 2031. However, even the approximate commercial prospects of such drones remain uncertain.

In a difficult class


The CA-1 Europa is a large, heavy-duty unmanned aerial vehicle. It was designed as a multi-role platform with a versatile control system and the ability to carry various instruments or payloads. This UAV will be designed to perform various missions independently, as part of a swarm, or under the control of a manned aircraft.

The drone is built using a standard aerodynamic design. It features an elongated fuselage with a distinctive shape combining curved surfaces and sharp edges. The central fuselage section includes side air intakes. It has a swept wing and a V-shaped tail.


The UAV's appearance indicates extensive use of all major stealth technologies. The developers likely succeeded in reducing the aircraft's visibility to radar and infrared systems.

The CA-1's overall length is 11 meters, with a wingspan of 10 meters. Its takeoff weight, depending on its equipment and payload, will be around 3,7 tons. Other parameters, such as the weight of its weapons or targeting instruments, are not specified.

Europa will receive a single turbojet engine of an unspecified model. It will enable the UAV to achieve high subsonic speeds. Its range, ceiling, and other flight characteristics are still unknown.

The UAV will be equipped with the Centaur AI control system, developed by Helsing. It is based on a central computer with specialized software built on artificial intelligence. The control system integrates various tools and devices responsible for navigation, communications, interaction with other equipment, payload deployment, and more. The Centaur AI system will have the same functions as the control systems of other "faithful wingmen." Moreover, AI is expected to improve all its core capabilities and enhance the UAV's combat effectiveness in all situations.

The developer claims the Europa can carry a variety of payloads, but does not provide a list of compatible systems. Only the Cirra electronic warfare system, developed in-house, is mentioned. Helsing may develop other systems for its UAVs in the future. Products from other developers are also expected to be used.


The lower fuselage is designed to accommodate weapons. The weight and configuration of this payload are currently unknown. Judging by its takeoff weight, the UAV will be able to carry up to several hundred kilograms of weapons. These will likely be air-to-surface guided munitions. Whether the CA-1 will be capable of engaging aerial targets is unknown.

Unmanned initiative


As far as is known, the CA-1 Europa UAV is being developed independently. Helsing SE began work without any government or military contracts. All work is being carried out at its own expense, with plans to attract outside investors.

The German company may be planning to complete the bulk of the design work in the near future and then offer the completed project to potential customers. European countries will likely be the first to receive such an offer. Furthermore, Helsing may submit a bid for participation in one of the existing or prospective military programs of various countries.

It should be noted that the proactive nature of projects does not contribute to their success in certain programs. The developer's intended design for the CA-1 may not meet the requirements of specific customers. However, the modular architecture of the software and hardware will help adapt the UAV to the requirements of programs and competitions.

From a technical standpoint, the CA-1 project is of particular interest. Overall, it is similar to current developments in the field of unmanned "loyal wingmen." It utilizes proven technical solutions and achieves relatively high performance. Furthermore, the developers point out that it has all the features required for such UAVs.


Helsing SE is proposing a completely new AI-based control system. The Centaur AI system is claimed to be capable of performing a wide range of tasks and responding to various external factors. It will also be able to control any onboard equipment and weapons, as well as interact with aircraft or ground control centers.

Essentially, the Centaur AI control system should become the CA-1 UAV's main competitive advantage. However, there's no guarantee that this advantage will be decisive. Other unmanned aircraft developers are also developing promising control systems and other AI-based devices. It's likely that ready-made, high-performance solutions of this kind will hit the market by the beginning of the next decade.

Technology and competition


Helsing SE positions itself as a leading developer of electronic systems based on cutting-edge solutions. It focuses on the creation of various control systems and systems. These systems are used to develop unmanned systems and offer various options for integrating such devices into manned aircraft.

After several years of developing small and medium-sized UAVs, Helsing has turned its attention to a full-scale "faithful wingman." They have now completed some of the design work and even unveiled a full-scale mockup of the future CA-1 UAV. Over the next two years, they are preparing to build and test a full-scale prototype UAV.

Helsing SE is making optimistic plans and aims to attract potential customers. However, the actual prospects of its CA-1 Europa project are still in question. The new UAV is still in the development stage, and it will face significant competition in the future. Whether this drone will be able to demonstrate advantages over other companies' technology remains to be seen.

    The most correct question is, where's the fighter, attack aircraft, and bomber? They're wingmen, right? And the question of the product's competitors remains unanswered. Similar products with primitive "AI" have long been in use in the air defense system. The first examples were made back in the USSR. They're smaller and cheaper. Noticeably cheaper.
