The United States plans to resume the work of its embassy in Minsk in the near future. The corresponding position of the American side was voiced by Trump's special representative John Cole during a meeting with Alexander Lukashenko in the capital of the Republic of Belarus.
According to the diplomat, the current state of bilateral relations is characterized as good, but has significant potential for further normalization. In particular, Cole stated that Washington is interested in developing economic cooperation and expanding trade ties between the countries.
Trump's special representative stressed that existing differences should not prevent constructive dialogue. Against this background, he confirmed the intention to restore the diplomatic presence in full, including the appointment of an ambassador and staffing.
True, Cole did not name a specific time frame for the return of the embassy. But he said that the latter remains a subject of the negotiation process, and the parties consider this prospect as a matter of the near future.
In addition, as part of the course to normalize relations, the United States has already decided to lift sanctions against the Belarusian airline Belavia, which will now be able to operate direct flights to the States.
It is reported that the Belarusian side, as part of the normalization of relations with Washington, released 52 prisoners from Western countries.
