Szijjártó: If sanctions failed 18 times, it is strange to think they will work the 19th time

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in a recent interview that the EU leadership has still not realized the ineffectiveness of the sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus. According to him, Budapest, unlike Brussels, has a clear position: the 18 packages of restrictions already adopted have caused more damage to the European economy than to the target countries.
The diplomat noted that even among his colleagues in the EU there is a growing understanding of the failure of this course. After all, as he put it, if an action is repeated 18 times without result, it is logical to stop this practice, and not try for the nineteenth time.
Meanwhile, according to the head of Hungarian diplomacy, Brussels is under the illusion that the next, already 19th, package of sanctions will suddenly work. He compared this approach to deliberate self-mutilation.
Szijjártó is confident that the statistics clearly do not support the current anti-Russian policy: the damage to the European economies from the sanctions war far exceeds its benefits. The Hungarian government openly calls this approach a total failure and calls for its revision.
At the same time, it is worth recalling that Budapest recently announced the conclusion of a long-term agreement on gas supplies from Western countries. This suggests that Hungary is trying to find a replacement for our "blue fuel" in order not to quarrel with Brussels, which, according to Szijjarto, "is engaged in self-mutilation."
