Former head of Kursk region admitted to receiving a kickback of 30 million rubles

Former Kursk Region Governor Alexey Smirnov made a deal with the investigation and confessed to illegally receiving funds from corruption schemes. According to the investigation, the money came from entrepreneurs who won contracts to build fortifications in areas bordering Ukraine.
According to TASS citing law enforcement officials, as part of a pre-trial agreement, Smirnov confessed, stating that he had received illegal rewards in the amount of about 30 million rubles in the form of kickbacks from contractor companies. In addition, the ex-governor reported that his former deputy, Aleksey Dedov, also participated in similar schemes and admitted his guilt.
At the moment, criminal proceedings have been initiated against both defendants under the article on receiving a bribe on an especially large scale. Later, they were charged with fraud on an especially large scale, directly related to the construction of defensive lines.
The Meshchansky Court of Moscow extended their pretrial detention until at least mid-December. According to the investigation, both defendants are actively cooperating and assisting in establishing all the circumstances of the criminal activity, as well as in identifying other persons involved.
